Outlook not responding message

Have several versions of Office 2007 on Vista, XP Home, and XP Proffessional
Platforms. Common problem is that I get an outlook not responding message
(all platforms). Then on the system tray icon there is a message suggesting
something to do with Exchange Server (all of my email accounts configured for
outlook [I have 6] are POP accounts).

The problem is annoying and is not tied to any "send/receive" requests and
will happen when I change from mail views to calender or contacts--and even
when I am going through my contacts.

I also notice similar "hang ups" within Word and suspect that it is an
underlying Microsoft problem--but since it does not "Crash" the machine I
never see a "OK to send information to Microsoft message".

Why did you configure an Exchange server in the mail profiles if you do not
use one? Use the Mail applet in Control Panel on each PC to open the mail
profile and remove the Exchange account.

Went to the mail applet in control panel as suggested and I do not see
anything that says I have an exchange server set up in a profile.

I just the the message (when I highlight the icon in the system tray) which
basically says "outlook is not responding, if you are using an exchange
server you may want to cancel pending requests by clicking the server icon in
the system tray ....(It will not allow me to copy the exact message--and
actually doesn't stay visible long enough to capture the entire message!).

I guess it can be something not-related to the "exchange server" but it
still locks up occaissionally. I tend to have multiple windows open at the
same time, but wouldn't expect that to be an issue, mostly word, excel,
outlook, and browsers (I do use both Firefox and IE depending upon the sites
I am going to)

Now that you have verified you don't have an Exchange account in the mail
profile, try starting Outlook with the /safe command switch and see if that
affects the issue. Make sure your send/receive interval is no less than
about ten minutes. Uninstall your AV program and reinstall it without the
mail scanning feature, if it is currently installed. If you are using a
desktop search program like Windows Desktop Search or Google Desktop Search,
configure it to not include indexing mail.

I believe I have desktop search loaded (sort of snuck in there one day).
How to I adjust the configuration?

I did have an IE google toolbar which I uninstalled.

There should be an "Indexing Options" applet in Control Panel. Mine's under
"Other Control Panel Options" in XP's Category view of the CP.

I am using Vista and did find the Indexing Options. Now the search for
"mail" items under file types.

Found and "unselected"
MSG and
Contact (I have alot in my contacts)
Mapimail was already unselected (left unselected)

Any others?

PST is another file type you might want to exclude.

PST was excluded and other items are now excluded---but problems still persist!
