Outlook Not Prompting for User Profile

H

Henry Stock

I created two user profiles for my system so I could separate business mail
from personal mail. So I have a business profile and a personal profile
each set up to access the appropriate pop server with the correct account
info.
I also specified that Out look should prompt for User Profile on starting.
The problem is that Outlook is NOT PROMPTING!

I have reset this several times, changed default profiles and such. Outlook
always starts the profile that was there first despite the fact that there
are two distinct profiles and the dialog is telling me that Outlook should
be prompting.

Can somebody suggest how to get Outlook to start prompting for user
profiles?

How to add a user profile
Use the following steps to add a user profile to your computer: 1. Click
Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Mail icon.
3. Click Show Profiles.
4. In the Mail dialog box, click Add.
5. Follow the prompts of the Inbox Setup Wizard.

How to receive a prompt for a user profile
If you have set up more than one profile on your computer, you can have
Outlook prompt you for the profile that you want to use when it starts. To
do this, follow these steps: 1. Close Outlook.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Mail icon.
4. Click Show Profiles.
5. Select Prompt for a Profile to Be Used, click Apply, and then click
OK.

Is the outlook.exe process running before you try and start Outlook again?
You might need to terminate any existing process first. If it is running
then you need to check why it isn't closing completely or if an application
is running it. Sync software can do it.

No, I don't think that is it. I also restarted the system and it is still
not showing me the option. Is there a registry entry that controls this?

Yes I did. The Outlook process does not appear to be running. I thought
for a second that the problem had corrected itself because I started Outlook
once today and it showed the dialog for choosing profiles.

But now it is back to doing just the same thing, e.g. opening one of the
profiles and not giving me the option to choose. This time it is choosing
the second profile. One thing I tried yesterday was to choose the second
profile as the default. Even when I did that Outlook still showed me the
first profile, so I went back and set the option to choose profiles and then
turned the machine off until today.

I have let this slip for some time, but I still have a problem. I am going
to try one more time with this news group before I go to Microsoft.

Situation:
1. I have Microsoft Outlook 2003 set up to use profiles.
2. I have defined two such profiles, one each for two separate email
accounts.
3. I have set up through the email setup in the Control Panel to have
Outlook prompt me for the specified profile each time I start Outlook.
4. This is not working, however. Outlook will open only only one profile per
Windows session. Even with the email setup set to ask for email profiles I
will get no more than one prompt from Outlook for email profiles per logon
session. Whatever I chose at that point becomes the default profile and I
am no longer prompted until I quit Windows and log in again.
5. This is not how this feature is supposed to work! It is frustrating and
time-wasting to have to logoff and then back on in order to read my mail
from my second separate account. I know that I could set up one profile to
handle both POP servers, but then it would be more difficult to segregate my
email as relating to whether it was from work or recreation and I am not
sure I could easily control to which outgoing server my outgoing email would
be sent each time I send a message. I would much rather have the product
work as advertised.

Any help you can provide me would be greatly appreicated.

Sincerely,

Henry Stock

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.
7. Skype - see if there is an upgrade available
8. Infuzer - a program to put weather reports into Outlook.

I'm having roughly the same issue. Outlook 2003 on Windows server
2003. I have two profiles and want to have two instances of Outlook
each using a different profile. I am prompted to pick a profile when
the first instance of Outlook is opened but there is no prompt when
the second instance is started - it just starts up using whatever
profile the first instance is using. I've read that the profile can't
be changed once Outlook is running so the prompt at start up is the
only way. Please help.
