Outlook no longer shows "Favorite Folders": how do I get it back?

I was working offline in Outlook, on my laptop when, for reasons I could not
reproduce, Outlook stopped displaying the "Favorite Folders" pane. The
problem persists even after rebooting, and even after reconnecting to my
local network. I cannot figure out how to get the Favorite Folders pane back.
Outlook otherwise appears to work just fine.

What can I do to restore access to the Favorite Folders pane?

At the bottom of the Navigation Pane, click the "Mail" button. The Favorite
Folders list is on that View.
