Outlook locks up

The computer is a new Dell, Office XP, XP Pro (workgroup installation)
Outlook locks up when you try to send or recieve mail - you have to use task
manager to close it - Outlook Inbox - not responding. With word as editor
the following error appeared - Microsoft Word - The remote procedure call
failed. The Internet connection is fine -(dialup) and you can sruf the web
even as Outlook is not responding. The other computers in the workgroup are
setup the same and do not have this problem. It has a current version of
Norton and an antivirus scan does not find any infected files. Also ran
stinger exe for Trojan's etc and it found nothing.
I ran the repair tool - it worked for 1/2 a day.
I uninstalled Outlook and re-installed it. Outlook worked for a day. I
uninstalled TCP and re-installed it - Outlook worked for about 15 minutes.
I sent about a half dozen emails with and without attachments - same lock
up - I had cleared the check for word and set it to Rich text - no RPC error
but it locks - inbox not responding. Also the outgoing message has to be
ended through task manager - it is not responding.
I unistalled Office - rebooted - reinstalled - rebooted. Worked OK.
Stopped working about 2 hours later. In box not responding.
I cannot find anything in the KB or on Google.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Linda

Forgot to add - they are using Internet Mail and Pop3 - not exchange
server - which is the only place I have found this error mentioned. No palm
pilot or synchronizing being used.

I am having the same exact problem with a new Dell
Dimension 2400. I wonder if it is a hardware issue? I
am looking for help too.......

Did your computer work properly for a while as this one did or did you
always have problems - are you able to send some email and then have it
fail? Is your problem as I described or slightly different?
Thanks for your reply and we will hope that someone has found a solution to
this.

Just as you described......... Any luck in finding a
solution? I haven't called Dell yet. Have you?

Thanks,

Linda:

I found the problem. Apparently, Mcafee's Personal
Firewall/Plus that comes installed on all new Dell
computers doesn't like Office XP or at least Outlook. I
uninstalled Mcafee Personal Firewall and my Outlook is
working just fine!!

I had to do a "Manual Uninstall" as outlined at
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/dell/?siteid=1

Good Luck!!

No luck yet - they use Norton - not McAfee and there is no personal firewall
installed. I made sure the built-in XP one is disabled and even turned off
the email scanning in Norton.
If I find a solution I will post it.

After removing McAfee Personal Firewall, my Outlook
worked for a couple of days...........but, the bug is
back!! Now, it freezes up on any email with an
attachment. Frustrated and waiting on a solution.

I read about another suggested fix. I was running Winfax
PRO 10.0 and it too does not like Office XP and Outlook
2002. I removed it and I am back in business (for now!).
Since you are running Symantec Norton Utilities, you may
have Winfax PRO as well. Check it out.

Sorry, not yet - check the post in this newsgroup from Linda W - dated
0/22 - the subject line - Re: Outlook 2003 and XP RPC error.
Maybe there will be an answer. If you set your mail up using Outlook
Express will it work? Does your ISP have web based email and if so can you
send and recieive mail through it without the lockups?

Think there might be - for sure I noticed a sortware based fax program - I
will check it out (client computer) and let you know - Thanks.
