Outlook Launches and Immediately Closes

Guest

Neo,
I got it to open when I used the MSCONFIG. So, there must be a conflict.
How do I determine what that conflict is and keep this from happening again?
Thanks,
Andrew

Here are some thoughts...

1) Does Outlook start with the /safe command line switch?

How to:
Start > Run > Type: outlook.exe /safe > OK button

Now if the same thing happens, then what types of programs start with your
operating system. For example, with Windows XP you can use MSCONFIG to
suppress the starting of non-microsoft applications and services. Reboot
and then try starting Outlook to see if one of those core programs are
interfering with Outlook. Once you find the program that is causing the
glitch, check with the manufacturer for an update or uninstall it.

Help. I am having the same problem. Could this be some sort of virus or
something embeded in the registry?

For what it's worth, I'm having the same problem. Outlook 2003 opens
and immediately closes. I've tried creating a new profile, creating a
new .pst file, deleting outcmd.dat, deleting extend.dat, starting
Outlook with every possible combination of /switches, uninstalling &
reinstalling it. Nothing has fixed the problem! My next step is to
uninstall it, then remove every single registry entry I can find that
remotely points to Outlook. Drastic, but that's my only remaining step
at this point.

Start > Run > Type: msconfig.exe > OK button

The last 2 tabs is what you are after.

For Services tab, you check the box at the bottom to hide all Microsoft
services. This will leave things that didn't ship with the OS. (e.g. video,
wireless, office 2003 setup engine, antivirus, .etc.) The last tab is what
is in your Startup menu + registry that start when logging onto Windows.
Just uncheck the boxes, reboot, and play the trial and error game.

Have you tried any of the routine procedures like
creating
a
new
profile?

I did not receive any error messages that I could
visably
detect. The
Outlook window just flashed on the screen. I've
looked
at
the Event
viewer
and there is nothing that even remotely seems
associated
with
Outlook.
If
it
happens again (hope not), I'll try to get more
information
about what
was
taking place. Thanks for your help.

I've not seen this one reported. Do you get any error
messages at
all?
Anything in Event viewer?

I'm running Office 2003 Std Edition with XP 2005
MCE
operating
system
on
SONY
VCG-RA910G 3.6Ghz 2G memory. I'm running Computer
Associates'
eTrust
anti-virus software (v7.1.501) that is up to
date.The
problem
first
started
morning of 6/8/06. The last software update was an
upgrade to
'Any
DVD'
on
6/3. Nothing but daily system checkpoints since
then.
Other than
normal
daily e-mail activities, internet banking &
browsing
and
watching
TV,
DVD
videos and video clips of my April vacation, the
only
activities
I've
engaged
in is backing up 2 CDs Using Drag & Drop CD/DVD and
backup of 2
DVDs
using
CloneDVD (both on 6/7). I executed Ad-Aware to
remove
spyware
but
problem
remained. As of 9:30 pm CDT, the problem seems to
have
resolved
itself
and I
can now open and close Outlook normally. If any
reconfiguration
of
any
application occurred since 6/3, it definitely
wasn't
intentional.
Having
worked with software development for 40+yrs, I know
there
is
always
a
reason
when software doesn't behave the way it is supposed
to.
I would
just
like
to
know what I changed to cause the problem and what
did
I
change to
correct
it.
Thanks for your comments Russ, I'm new to the
discussion
groups.

You've posted no information. At the very least
start
by
stating
your
Outlook version, how it is configured and the
changes
you made
just
before
you started seeing this behavior. Things happen
for a
reason.

I have been having frequent problems opening
Outlook.
When I
launch
the
program, the window opens on the screen and
immediately closes.
This
does
not happen 100% of the time. When the problem
occurs, my
normal
solution
is
to shut down and cold start my PC. Information
appreciated
for
anyone
having a similar problem and a possible
correction.
