Outlook Launches and Immediately Closes

I have been having frequent problems opening Outlook. When I launch the
program, the window opens on the screen and immediately closes. This does
not happen 100% of the time. When the problem occurs, my normal solution is
to shut down and cold start my PC. Information appreciated for anyone
having a similar problem and a possible correction.

You've posted no information. At the very least start by stating your
Outlook version, how it is configured and the changes you made just before
you started seeing this behavior. Things happen for a reason.

I'm running Office 2003 Std Edition with XP 2005 MCE operating system on SONY
VCG-RA910G 3.6Ghz 2G memory. I'm running Computer Associates' eTrust
anti-virus software (v7.1.501) that is up to date. The problem first started
morning of 6/8/06. The last software update was an upgrade to 'Any DVD' on
6/3. Nothing but daily system checkpoints since then. Other than normal
daily e-mail activities, internet banking & browsing and watching TV, DVD
videos and video clips of my April vacation, the only activities I've engaged
in is backing up 2 CDs Using Drag & Drop CD/DVD and backup of 2 DVDs using
CloneDVD (both on 6/7). I executed Ad-Aware to remove spyware but problem
remained. As of 9:30 pm CDT, the problem seems to have resolved itself and I
can now open and close Outlook normally. If any reconfiguration of any
application occurred since 6/3, it definitely wasn't intentional. Having
worked with software development for 40+yrs, I know there is always a reason
when software doesn't behave the way it is supposed to. I would just like to
know what I changed to cause the problem and what did I change to correct it.
Thanks for your comments Russ, I'm new to the discussion groups.

I did not receive any error messages that I could visably detect. The
Outlook window just flashed on the screen. I've looked at the Event viewer
and there is nothing that even remotely seems associated with Outlook. If it
happens again (hope not), I'll try to get more information about what was
taking place. Thanks for your help.

No, I haven't. As you can probably tell, creating a new profile is not a
standard procedure for me. I'm sure there are many standard procedures for

When Outlook closes immediately with no indication of why, it usually
indicates a corrupt profile. Creating a new profile is easy.

Russ,

I too tried the standard resolutions that you indicated through a link on a
previous thread (using scanpst, new profiles, rename outcmd.dat etc.) and
have not had success. The scanpst did indicate it found errors and fixed
them. I was able to create a new profile and did notice that outlook created
a new file outlook1 (cause there already was an outlook based on efforts i
tried earlier). I did do the search for outcmd.dat to rename, but did not
find it. I would be glad to reload and reinstall Outlook if I could without
it "remembering" settings. I have tried to install reinstall office Xp
proffessional a couple of times and I also uninstalled all the automatic s/w
updates to as far back as march this year. The problem may have been
triggered by a recent set of updates that I installed 6/18 (KB916281,
KB917344, KB914389,KB918 439,KB917734), but removing them did not seem to
correct the problem either.

Any advice is appreciated. This is a personal home PC and I am able to
reinstall s/w etc. Let me know if a complete reinstall of Windows XP is an
option, since removing/reinstalling Office professional does not help.
Thanks,
Zal

system
on
SONY
VCG-RA910G 3.6Ghz 2G memory. I'm running Computer Associates'
eTrust
anti-virus software (v7.1.501) that is up to date. The problem
first
started
morning of 6/8/06. The last software update was an upgrade to
'Any
DVD'
on
6/3. Nothing but daily system checkpoints since then. Other than
normal
daily e-mail activities, internet banking & browsing and watching
TV,
DVD
videos and video clips of my April vacation, the only activities
I've
engaged
in is backing up 2 CDs Using Drag & Drop CD/DVD and backup of 2
DVDs
using
CloneDVD (both on 6/7). I executed Ad-Aware to remove spyware
but
problem
remained. As of 9:30 pm CDT, the problem seems to have resolved
itself
and I
can now open and close Outlook normally. If any reconfiguration
of
any
application occurred since 6/3, it definitely wasn't intentional.
Having
worked with software development for 40+yrs, I know there is
always
a
reason
when software doesn't behave the way it is supposed to. I would
just
like
to
know what I changed to cause the problem and what did I change to

it.
Thanks for your comments Russ, I'm new to the discussion groups.

For what it's worth, I'm having the same problem. Outlook 2003 opens
and immediately closes. I've tried creating a new profile, creating a
new .pst file, deleting outcmd.dat, deleting extend.dat, starting
Outlook with every possible combination of /switches, uninstalling &
reinstalling it. Nothing has fixed the problem! My next step is to
uninstall it, then remove every single registry entry I can find that
remotely points to Outlook. Drastic, but that's my only remaining step
at this point.

I am having the same problem. Tried the new profile and it did not work.

My circumstances are the same.

If I had to guess, the solution might be to get Office 2007 (wonder how I
came up with that idea)

Very strange that several people who are experienced users all had corrupted
files about the same time casuing the same problem.

Here are some thoughts...

1) Does Outlook start with the /safe command line switch?

How to:
Start > Run > Type: outlook.exe /safe > OK button

Now if the same thing happens, then what types of programs start with your
operating system. For example, with Windows XP you can use MSCONFIG to
suppress the starting of non-microsoft applications and services. Reboot
and then try starting Outlook to see if one of those core programs are
interfering with Outlook. Once you find the program that is causing the
glitch, check with the manufacturer for an update or uninstall it.

Originally, I had outlook 2000. The problem started about a week ago. I can
not recall installing anything new that would cause the problem.
I upgraded to outlook 2003 thinking this would take care of the problem. It
did not.
So, I uninstalled all the microsoft office 2000 and office 2003 programs. I
then reinstalled the full office 2003. I still have the problem.
I created new profiles. It did not help.
I repaired the .pst file. It did not help.
I did move the .pst file to another computer and it worked just fine. I
also imported the file into microsoft outlook express. Express worked fine.
So, it is not the .pst file.

I tired to do another repair. It did not help.
The program opens for about 5 seconds and the icon appears on the bottom
right icon tray. Then the program closes and the icon is still there. But
when I move my mouse over it, it then disappears.

Help. I am having the same problem. Could this be some sort of virus or
something embeded in the registry?

For what it's worth, I'm having the same problem. Outlook 2003 opens
and immediately closes. I've tried creating a new profile, creating a
new .pst file, deleting outcmd.dat, deleting extend.dat, starting
Outlook with every possible combination of /switches, uninstalling &
reinstalling it. Nothing has fixed the problem! My next step is to
uninstall it, then remove every single registry entry I can find that
remotely points to Outlook. Drastic, but that's my only remaining step
at this point.

Locate your outcmd.dat file and rename it to .old

Russ, I also have the same problem where Outlook 2003 immediately

created a new profile as noted below but this did not resolve the

Any other possibilites?

No, I haven't. As you can probably tell, creating a new

a
standard procedure for me. I'm sure there are many standard
procedures
for

No. It does the exact same thing.
