Outlook is trying to retrieve data....

Have a user on VPN getting the above error ("Outlook is trying to retrieve
data from the Microsoft Exchange server....") but only when sending certain
types of attachments.

It's Outlook 2003, connecting to an Exchange 2003 (SBS) server, on VPN from a
DSL line to a frac T1. Sending emails fails, with apparent loss of contact
with the Exchange server, when sending large binary emails, over about 500k.
Text files up to at least 2MB go fine, even if renamed to masquerade as
another filetype (.jpg, .pdf, etc.) I've noticed on at least a few occasions,
when testing, that the contact is lost as soon as the file is attached to the
email, even before sending. That is, I drop a large PDF file on the email
body, notice a burst of sending traffic on the VPN connection status icon in
the systray, then Outlook starts whining again that it's waiting for the
Exchange server. With the email composition window still open, SEND button
untouched.

The problem shows up when Outlook is set to either Cached or Online mode.

Other users connecting to the server do not seem to have this problem.
Hooking up my laptop to the same DSL connection I was able to send large
attachments with Outlook 2000. So, it doesn't seem to be a server side
problem, or a problem with the particular connection. Any ideas?
