Outlook is striking out a message instead of deleting it, why?

I can't figure out why I have messages previously deleted in my inbox. When
I hit the X to delete the message, it simply strikes through the name, but
remains in the inbox. I want these gone. Help please!

What Version, Operating System, status of updates? Give the folks here a

Victory,

The first time I set up an IMAP mail account I discovered that I
had to use the "Purge Deleted Messages" item under the Edit Menu
rather than "Empty Deleted Items Folder". Not sure if that
applies in your case. If not, do as Chuck suggests and provide
some more details.
