Outlook is not responding

I had previously posted this as a response to another post by mistake
- sorry for the double post:

Several months ago I was running Outlook 2002 and I began to have
problems. Outlook would hang up and I would have to reboot. It
seemed to get worse and worse.

I upgraded to 2003 and the problem occurred again??

I Reformatted my hard drive, loaded everything again and it worked
fine - for a while - a few days - then the entire problem started
again. It seems to be related to attachments. If I try to look at an
email with an attachment Outlook hangs and when I attempt to shut it
down I get a Not Responding message. These BTW are any attachments -
even those that I have opened before.

As before - the problem seems to be getting worse & worse.

My PST is not large - I started all over again(although I did import
my address book). I run the same PST on another computer without a
problem so there doesn't seem to be a problem with that.

I just updated the latest Office update - no help.

Again - I am running the same software on a different computer - I
took this all the war down to a reformatted hard drive and reloaded
everything ??

Sometimes I can shut the computer down and the problem goes away for a
while - mow even that only works occasionslly.

I see no other problems withany other programs.

i run XP PRO and use Norton Antivirus. I got inundated with
SWENviruses - which the virus program picked up - if that may be
relavent.

Any suggestions?

An additional symptom of this problem is that frequently - but not
always - when I attempt to attach a file to an outgoing message, it
fails and I get a Remote Call Procedures Failed message.

Thanks for any information you may provide,

I would start with a complete virusscan to make sure SWEN didn't come
through. Then run scanpst.exe against the pst file. If this doesn't help
also do a Check Disk and defrag on your volumes.

Roady:

First - thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately neither worked. I
had already done several Virus Scans but did another just to be sure -
no Viruses.

I tried Scanpst - no problems.

As I said - it seems to just get worse & worse - now I just download
mail and it locks up. If i restart the computer and start Outlook in
the safe mode - I may be able to read the emails that I downloaded
before but it'll lock up again when I download mail or try to send an
attachment.

If (from experience) I reformat the disk - reload the OS and reinstall
Office - I get a few normal days then the first sign of trouble is
after shutting down Outlook I get a message saying that there was a
problem with outlook. Then is progressively gets worse.

One suggestion I recieved was that I have a deeply imbedded virus on
the drive, undetectable by Norton - I don't - I'm stymied. I was just
hoing that someone might have run into a similar problem. As I say --
Outlook seems to be the only problem.

Any other suggestions - Anybody??

Can you post with more detail? Also try looking for clues by looking at
Event Viewer, CPU usage in Task Manager (sort by CPU to see what's using the
most CPU time).... While in Task Manager, look for any odd processes you
don't recognize (which will be all of them if you've not looked at the list
before!) Any processes that look out of place can usually be IDed by
searching google.
