Outlook Ignoring Category Based Rules

I have a rule: "apply this rule after message arrives assigned to category A
move it to the B folder B and Stop Processing More Rules. This is the first
rule in the list. My address book has contacts with category A, but e-mail
from that contact is not being moved.

That's because your rule does not say :

If an email arrives from a Contact who is in the Category xxx, move the
email to yyy folder.

Your rule says if the email arrives and the email is categorised xxx, move
the email to yyy folder. What you rule does is moves emails that arrive
with a Category. So if I send you an emaila and I categorise it before
sending, your rule will fire.

Duncan,

Let me ask you first if the contacts you have in this category are
constantly changing or if it is fairly set. There is a way to make happen
what you wantthat involves copying your contacts in this category into a new
address book within Outlook. If you can tolerate making a copy of the
contacts whose emails you want to sort like this, then it is fairly easy to
make a rule to do this. This way you don't have to change the rule everytime
you want to add another contact to that category. Again, if this sounds good
let me know and I'll write out directions for you.

No, no don't use Address books.

What you can do is make a Contacts Folder for each Category of Contact, then
rules can be apllied to incoming emails from Contacts in Folder FFF.
Whether you can make a rule like that depends on your version which you
forgot to mention.

Sorry, contacts folder is what I meant when referring to address books. If
you click on Address Books in Outlook, it lists all of the contact folders as
seperate address books. Also, in the rules wizard, it doesn't use the phrase
"Contact folder" but rather says "sender is in specified address book". I
thought saying it's a contact folder might be confusing.

Thanks Judy -

I thought that was rather odd wording. But "contact who is in category" does
not seem to be available (Outlook 2003). Am I missing something or do I have
to make up multiple address book assigning each category to a different
address book?

oh yes, the whole address book/Contacts thing is very confusing.

BTW Matt, soliciting to become an MVP may not be an effective pathway to
becoming one.
