I have Microsoft Outlook 2003 as my default mail program, and I have it shown
in the start menu (I'm using XP Pro).. I looked today, and the icon is a
generic icon (the one that shows up for unknown file types)... How do I
restore this icon to be the Microsoft Outlook icon?? Help please!! :)

Steve: Go to Add and Remove Programs under the Control Panel. Click on MS
Office Change. When the dialog box appears request a repair. Have your
installation disk handy. This will re-install your icon(s). Phil Allen

you might be able to use the "Detect and Repair" option under the Help Menu
from within Outlook!!

I tried this option after I received your message. It did not repair the
icon on my Start Menu. Any other suggestions?

I thought this might work, too - and I tried this earlier today with no
success.. I also tried to "Change" the program in the Add/Remove Programs
menu, and selected "Detect and Repair" and checked "Restore Start Menu Icons"
- but that didn't work, either. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

delete the current and create a new shortcut
OR repair the current shortcut!!

Rt click the icon( program in start menu) and select properties. then select
find target.

start here for finding the shortcut source. this should get you close to
where the shortcut should be. then delete old/create new or repair current.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
assuming your on "C" drive.

but it's not a shortcut! It's on the top of the start menu, right under
Internet Explorer... when I right-click and select Properties, it takes me
to "Email Accounts", "Data Files", etc.... Is there a place where that icon
is stored somewhere buried in the Windows directory? :)

The link is still working right? If so, then a cached icon somewhere probably needs to be refreshed.

The following are just guesses

1) 'Start Menu Properties' -> 'Customize' -> toggle the icon size from small to large (or vice versa) and see if that refreshes the icon. Then toggle back to your preferred size.

2) Selecting a different mail client then switching back to Outlook.

General method to refresh windows icon cache:

Display Properties -> 'Appearance' tab -> 'Advanced' button -> 'Item' = Icon -> adjust the size down by one, apply, and then reset to original size.

Good Luck,
Keith

if that icon doesn't work, rt click and choose remove from list or delete.
go to Start>All programs
find Outlook 2003 there( does this icon work?), rt click and choose "pin to
start menu".
