Um, where is Outlook Express on a new Vista Home Premium computer?

I can't find it.

There is no Outlook Express in Windows Vista.
Windows Mail is the new email program which
is located on the Start Menu.

That's due to the fact that Outlook Express is not there...

Closest thing is probably Windows Live Mail Desktop but I gave up on
them ever finishing that so now use Thunderbird for mail and news and it
looks much like OE. Unlike WLMD it's fast with newsgroups and suits me
because it "Looks" the same on Windows or Linux. Of course if OE had
still been available I'd probably have stuck with that.

How do I get all their settings, and email folders from OE to the
bound-to-have-problems email program?

Look at the export options in OE. Then look at the import options in
Windows Mail.

BTW: I haven't had any problems with Windows Mail. Seems to be just OE with
a new name and a new look.

Windows mail has IMPORT

file > import

Outlook express is version 6,
Windows mail is actually Outlook express version 7

same thing, with a new name to try to convice us that vista has something
new...
(actually they changed the name to stop the confusion with outlook from
office)

it has some differences but if you know outlook express you know windows
mail.

Except with Windows Mail you can't set up accounts like you can in OE. Each
"user" needs a separate Vista Windows account. Sort of a pain since my wife
and I share a laptop and really have no need for separate accounts beyond
email. Having to switch users at the windows level just to check email is a
pain.

Can I install an earlier version of MSIE and then get OE?

This is a real issue for them, not having OE.

Thx.

Bill, Thunderbird is the most "OE like" software in terms of appearance,
and the setup is quite similar, and it's quite reliable. It's also
appreciably faster than the Windows Mail.

Though I stand to be corrected, I'm pretty sure the answer is a pretty solid
"no."

Have they (whoever "they" are) looked at Windows Mail at all? It's very much
like OE. Can you explain why it's an issue? Maybe someone here knows how to
work around that issue.

Why?

You are correct.

It's more than "very much like OE." It's essentially just the latest
release of OE. They changed the name and some details under the hood,
but in terms of look and feel, it's almost identical.

Changing the name was good, because too many people confused Outlook
and Outlook Express, but changing the name doesn't really make it a
different program.
