Outlook Express won't open from Read Mail icon

I have recently bought a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard and Mouse.
This may be a coincidence, but I find that when I click on the Read Mail icon
in IE7 I get the following message: "Windows cannot access the specified
device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access
the item". Strangely enough, I can open Outlook Express by pressing the Mail
button on the keyboard.

Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults
Make OE the default mail program.

If that doesn't do it, From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/defaultl.htm

Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the double quotes and spaces:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both
IE and OE.

If that isn't enough, see this article:
"Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098

You might also want to try this:

Restores OE to the E-mail clients list in Internet Options
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/oe_client.htm

To set Outlook as the default mail client,- Go to Start, Run - Type in the
following with quotation marks and press OK
"C:\program files\microsoft office\office\outlook.exe" /checkclient
For more information on Outlook see:

Frank,

Thanks. I've found that the problem goes deeper than I thought. When I tried
to download XP_RestoreOE.exe from the Doug Knox site I received the same
message I got when I tried to open Outlook Express "Windows cannot access the
specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions
to
access the item". The Blue heade line referred to Local Settings\Temporary
Internet.

I'm afraid I have no idea. Sorry.

Frank,

Thanks anyway. As a matter of interest, I have solved the problem. I was
running a trial version of Zone Alarm Security Suite. Once I uninstalled it
everthing was OK

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to remember that.
