Outlook Express - Reading Mail

When I read an email in Outlook Express and then delete the message
from within that message, it automatically shows me the next message. I
prefer the way Outlook handles this. If I delete the message, it simply
deletes the message and returns me to the Inbox. I can then decide if I
want to view another message. With Outlook Express, if I don't want to
see another message, I still have to close the one it opened
automatically. Is there a way to make Express work more like Outlook in
this regard?

No. Your only option is to read messages in the Preview pane.
