I am getting a new computer with a Vista OS.
I have been using OE email on my XP computer. Is there a way to transfer
all of my folders and my address book from OE to the new Windows Mail ?
If not, I would appreciate any help in getting all of my OE 'stuff' from my
present XP computer into the new Windows Mail I will have on the new computer.
Thanks in advance.

Thank you Gary. I will save the website you gave me for my 'techie' friend
who will be transferring everything from my old computer to the new one. I
get completely lost jut reading through those directions. He has a setup at
his home where he can get the job done -- hopefully ! ! !
One more question - if you know the answer...if he follows the instructions
given will everything automatically 'appear' in my Windows Mail just the way
I have it in OE - folders and all ? DO I need to set up ahead of time,
identical folders in Windows Mail?
I had started to make identical folders in my Windows mail program on my
laptop computer - thinking that would get everything into the right 'slot',
but I don't really know what to do . Maybe I need to delete all those
folders I have put there ? ?
OR - when the transfer is made , does it just put the entire OE mail program
onto my new Vista OS computer so that I will have that program besides
Windows Mail ?
Hope I haven't asked too many questions, but feel they are important ones
for me to understand what is happening. I am so afraid of losing the many
folders and emails I have in OE.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer !! It is much appreciated.

The OE program can't run under Vista, so it won't be transferred.
The procedure I referenced should duplicate the folder structure you
had with OE, so don't pre-create folders in Windows Mail.

We're here to answer questions, so don't be hesitant to ask away.

I have a copy of my XP hard drive (not bootable), but I never did an export
of my address book. I was able to import my mail folders, but how do I get
the contacts in without having access to OE?

No, can't be done. The Microsoft recommend way is:
1. Click Create Mail.
2. Click To and select the recipient.

dGary, I have one more question (at least for today !). I mentioned that I
have a laptop with Vista, thus Windows Mail. That is not the new computer I
referred to. The new one is a desktop that should arrive late this week.
My question is --- when I open the Windows Mail on the new desktop computer,
will any emails I have in my Windows Mail on my laptop be on the new computer
- or will each one run independently?
Thanks once again !
Lynda

Your new desktop computer has no way of retrieving emails already
downloaded to your laptop. There are two exceptions:
a) If the mail account is IMAP rather than POP, it can access all emails on
the server.
b) If POP, and your laptop was configured to leave a copy on the server,
some mail providers will allow a second download.

Re: Yahoo:
Unless you have a paid Yahoo account:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
you can't use it with a POP email program like Windows Mail.

Re: MSN:
In February, Microsoft enabled POP access for free Hotmail/Live/MSN accounts.
Follow the settings given here:
http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!CC9301187A51FE33!49799.entry
Use port 587 rather than port 25 for the SMTP server.

Although it accepts the newer Live.com addresses, Windows Mail's
account setup wizard is hard-coded to reject Hotmail and MSN addresses.
To get around that, when you enter your Hotmail/MSN email address initially,
use a fake one, such as (e-mail address removed). After the account setup is complete,
go back and correct your email address.

still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.
