Outlook Express takes over Outlook

C

Chris Lenius

I purchased Office 2003 (Student and Teacher ed.) and
installed it. I want to use Outlook for email, not
Outlook Express. When I start Outlook it asks if I want
it to be the default email program and I say yes, but
Express seems to take over sometimes. For example, when
I click on an emial link in Word or Excel, the new
message opens in Express.
I've tried going in Outlook to Tools>Options>Other and
checking the box to make Outlook the default mail
program. The box stays checked, but Express still takes
over.
I've also tried going into Control Panels>Add or Remove
Programs>Add or Remove Windows Components and removing
Express.
Then I went to Control Panels>Add or Remove Programs>Set
Program Access and Defaults and selected "my email
program" as default.
None of this works. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Set Program Access and Defaults (left column button)
click custom (double chevron on right side)
make desired changes
exit with ok's

Also check in Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs tab to make sure
Outlook is listed there as the default email program.

You might have to untick an option in outlook express, to stop it from
thinking it's the default mail proggie.

Yep. That's what I had to do to avoid the prompts about program defaults
whenever I opened Outlook Express as an alternate newsreader.
