Outlook Express Problem, had to resort to Mozilla Thunderbird.

Hello Newsgroup,

I have recently rebuilt my PC, Windows XP SP2+, Media Player 11,
Internet Explorer 7, Office 2007 Professional Pro, .NET Framework 3.5.
Since installing the MS Office 2007 SP1, I am not able to use (let alone
start) MS Outlook Express.

First prompt that comes to screen titled Outlook Express,

"Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to
create the font cache object. Your computer may be out of memory", (NOT),
"or your disk full", (NOT). "Contact Microsoft support for further
assistance." (NOT) (0x800700E, 14007).

Clicking the OK button yields the second prompt,

"Outlook Express could not be started because MSO.DLL could not be
initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly."

Could not find a website through Google, nor on MS site that resolved
this issue.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks Newsgroup.

Regards,

From:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store. Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder. You
will lose your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news
servers, but it might get you into OE. Note: The DBX file are hidden files
in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx. You should now get into OE. Try importing the messages from the
folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use one of these
tools to extract the messages:

DBXtract:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx

DBXpress: {much faster for large files}
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

Thanks for your prompt response Bruce, unfortunate for me no luck with
the links, very relevant to my OEXP dilemma, makes me wonder what's at
play here.

You might want to give an Outlook Express newsgroup a try.

Start here: http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Hello Bruce, Peter, and PA Bear,

Thank you all, all that was proposed to me was for my dilemma, a lot of fixing was attempted
following the instructions provided. Unfortunately I am not able to get Outlook Express working
at all, I still get the

"Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to
create the font cache object. Your computer may be out of memory", (NOT),
"or your disk full", (NOT). "Contact Microsoft support for further
assistance." (NOT) (0x800700E, 14007).

and

"Outlook Express could not be started because MSO.DLL could not be
initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly."

Prompts and then nothing. I can live with using Mozilla's Thunderbird, it just that there is a
certain elegance with Outlook Express and usability. I think (coming from a know nothing on the
subject), the only solution maybe if OE came with it's own installer as Thunderbird does.
Probably one very good point about Thunderbird.

I've uninstalled, then reinstalled OE, having IE7 installed there maybe no going back in
attempting to get OE working again. Just the impression I get after reading all those links you
provided for me.

Thank you once again all, if there is one more thing to try, please drop it in.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities > Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
