Does anyone know if a fix exists for the known bug where
a tilde (~) icon is deposited by Outlook Express 6 on the
desktop after sending e mail? XP Pro OS.

Known issue with an Outlook Express patch that was put out.

It's a bug in Outlook Express update 330994 (and 331923 before it).
If you rename that file and give it a wab extension you will discover, much
to
your amazement that it is a copy of your Address Book.

Due to a rather minor glitch in the update to Outlook Express it is creating
the
file in the wrong location and to add insult to injury it is not even giving
it
the proper name. The file is created whenever you edit the Address Book and
then
close the program you were using (Outlook Express or any other program that
uses
your Address Book).

There are three possible solutions:
1) Delete it.
2) Ignore it.
3) R-click the file, choose "Properties" and place a check in "Hidden" then
"Apply". This will only work if your system is not set to show hidden files
and
depends entirely on the theory that "What you don't see, won't bother you".
It
also has the benefit of still keeping a current backup of your Address Book
on
the system.

This is a known bug that was in the April 2003 Cumulative Patch.
Microsoft is aware of it and is working on a fix. {Don't hold your breath!}.
You can delete it safely, but it may return.

Hi Frank,

The "Mysterious Tilde File" usually appears just after you close OE but only
if you made any change to Address Book during this OE session...but not
always.

It's usually found on Desktop but on occasion appears at C:\ . Rename it
~.wab and you'll see it's an exact copy of Address Book. You can either
rename it or simply delete it.

It first appeared in November '02 with 331923/Cumulative Update for OE6-SP1
which was only available via manual download and with the more recent
330994/April '03 Cumulative Patch for OE, available via Windows Update.

You can either wait for the fix or follow the uninstall directions for the
patch at the link below.
