Graham-

You'd need to give us more detailed information on what's happening to get a
proper diagnosis.

Based on the information you did provide...

1. Export your Deleted Items folder to a .PST then permanently remove all
items from the Deleted Items folder. Chances are that you have a corrupt
message or two in this folder which is causing problems. Otherwise, the
folder size may be too large for your system to handle effectively.

2. Make sure you are running the latest version of Outlook Express 6 with
all of the relevant updates available from Windows Update.

3. You might be dealing with a bad sector or two on your hard drive.

4. Are you getting any error messages? If so, what are they?

5. Keep your mailbox as small as possible by archiving items and compacting
your database.

It sounds like folder corruption. It could be that the option to
"Compact messages in background" in Tools, Options, Maintenance has been
selected. Deselect as it will corrupt folders.

Close Outlook Express. Enable show hidden files ( if using Windows 2000
or Windows XP ). Enter Windows Explorer and using Tools, Find, Files
and Folders search for the "Deleted items.dbx" without the quotes.
Delete the file. A new folder will be automatically generated when you
restart Outlook Express. Finally run File, Folder, Compact All whilst
Offline.

Do not keep your mail in any of the default folders of OE, move them to
folders created by you under Local Folders.

A link for maintenance hints.
