What version of Outlook and do you still have the CD for installing it?
Many
versions will run under Vista and make such a transfer easier.

I am also trying to get my mail from another computer that Outlook Express 6
to a new computer with Windows Vista. I thought that I would be able to
export the messages but I can't find the export file to be able to import it
into the new computer. Is there any way to know where the export file is? Or
is there some other way to move the messages to the new computer? The two
computers are not networked.

On the Outlook system, transfer your emails from Outlook to Outlook Express.
When finished, use this information to transfer the Outlook Express files to
your Vista machine and import them into Windows Mail>

How do I back up my files and settings?

Hi, Natasha - I'm having same problem. I was able to find where the files
are. They should be in the following: C:\Documents & Settings\Your
Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst. This
should be where yours are located too. If not, you can find out by opening
Outlook and finding the folder "Personal Folder" listed under "All Mail
Folders" section. Highlite this, right click and select "Personal Folder
Properties" then select "Advanced" tab in lower right corner, Under
"General" tab you will see a "Filename" and path listed. This is where your
mail are saved at.

I've read that Outlook mail won't import well into Windows Mail unless you
have Outlook installed under Vista. Windows Mail uses part of Outlook
during the import process.

See if you can install Outlook 2003 or more recent. New computers often
come with a trial version that will work more than long enough to do the
import.

If not, you'll probably have to import the mail first into Outlook Express
on the old machine, then tranfer its files (probably .dbx and .wab files)
to the new machine, then import them into Windows Mail.

Hi, I need help in this area as well, if anyone has the solution can you
please share it with me....thanks!

Hi All: I am having a similar problem; however, my old email is now on an
external HDD as old computer died and new computer has Vista. I am having a
hard time even opening mail from external drive as old Outlook email program
doesn't seem to be compatible with Vista? When I open Outlook on new
computer to read and/or import old mail, I can't find location. Please help!

Thank you.

If you mean Outlook rather than Outlook Express, copy the PST file to your
Documents folder, install Outlook and set it to that PST file. Then WinMail
can import from it.

If you used Outlook Express on the old computer, see

My problem is slightly different- when I look for where my old messages are
stored under the import path, it says there are no messages to import, but
when I look in explorer they are there. any ideas? thanks

It takes extra effort to transfer messages from Outlook to Windows Mail.
You have two choices: 1. Install Outlook under Vista, preferably version
2003 or later. Windows Mail needs part of it to be able to import .pst
files. A free trial version will run more than long enough for the
transfer.
2. Transfer the messages from Outlook to Outlook Express on the old
computer. Then transfer from Outlook Express to Windows Mail:

Some methods of moving the files to the new computer make them readonly
They'll import better if you make them read-write if needed.
