Outlook Email Stops While Wriiting

About 1 minute into writing an email I receive a message "Microsoft WORD has
encountered a problem and needs to close". I click OK and an error reporting
screen comes up which does not send the error report, rather the program
hangs up for about 4 minutes after which it closes and Microsoft WORD opens.
The message I had been writing is gone, not in "drafts", just gone. If I
very quickly write, address, and send the email it goes out. How do I
correct this problem?
 
Depending on your version of Office (which you didn't mention), have you
tried running either Office Diagnostics or Detect and Repair from the Help
menu of any installed Office product?
