Outlook does screwy things when moving some messages to differentfolders

Outlook Guy

This is Outlook 2000, but I believe the problem is common to all
versions of Outlook.

When ever I select a single e-mail or a group of e-mails and then try
to move them to a different folder, I've got a 50-50 chance that
instead of moving them, outlook will open a new e-mail composition
window and throw the message(s) being moved into the new message as an
attachment.

At that point, the messages are basically lost, because I can't undo
that action. If I simply try to close the new message composition
window, outlook won't return the attached messages back to where they
came from.

I've read where Outlook may (or will) do this when the messages being
moved are some sort of higher-level message type (like a calender or
scheduled item) but that doesn't apply to the messages I'm moving -
they are pure internet e-mail messages, either ones that I've recieved
(and are sitting in my inbox) or messages that I've sent (and are
sitting in my sent folder).

Anyone seen this before?

How can I fix or alter Outlook so that this behavior stops?

you are using drag and drop? Try using Edit menu, Move to folder. If you
drag and drop it on an item instead of the folder, it will open a new
message. You can drag them off the message, either to the original folder or
to the new one.

I don't drag-n-drop.

I highlight the message(s), right-click, then select "move to folder"
and then select the folder.

Instead of moving the message(s), Outlook will open a new message
composition window and drop the selected message(s) at the bottom of
the new message as an attachment(s). I get no warning that outlook is
going to do this. And it doesn't happen every time I perform a move.

And if I try to close or cancel the new message composition window,
I'm asked if I really want to abandon the attachments, but I have no
other alternative because I have no way to return them back to their
original location in their original state.

Hmm. I don't recall ever seeing it happen with the move to folder command -
I've done it a million times using drag and drop though.

I've had this same problem in Outlook 2000 and in 2003, but not that often.
I thought I had the issue narrowed down to trying to move a deleted task or
calendar appointment along with a block of email messages to my personal
folder. I archive all of my sent and deleted emails in folders by month and
I have a different pst set up for each year. I don't recall ever having this
problem come up moving mail from my sent folder to a personal folder.

It is definitely frustrating not being able to undo the process and return
the email back to the original folder. I know of only two ways to save the
information and that is to open each attachment and forward the email to
yourself or choose the file/save option in the menu and store them in another
folder somewhere (which I often forget about that folder when doing searches
for all mail containing key words).
