Outlook deleted itself without any prompting. System restore would not
restore it. All mail and contacts were lost. How can this happen whilst the
computer was turned off.

It cannot, only user input can delete a program, though some virus's may
make them not work
What version of Office / Outlook was involved?
If you use Vista, type Outlook in the start/search
If winXp does Office or Outlook show under Start>Programs?
Is this a new PC?

Outlook had disappeared when turned on after a break of a few hours
-- from last use. there was NO help from me. Am using 2007. Have now
reinstalled outlook but still have not got my address book. The computer is
relatively new with little home use.

All Outlook data are kept in one or more PST files (Personal Folders
Files). Search for your PST file(s), then open it/them with Outlook.
This should bring back all your contacts, past mail messages, and other
Outlook data.
