Outlook connector is forcing me to upgrade, but won't cooperate.

I have a gmail and two msn email accounts hooked up with Outlook 2007. I am
running Windows 7 Professional which I installed a month ago. gmail hooked
up without a hitch. Using Connector I was finally able to hook up my msn
accounts (I am not an expert computer user). Today when I start Outlook I
get the message:

"To continue accessing your mail using Microsoft Office Outlook, you must
upgrade to the latest version of Outlook connector."

I click Upgrade Now. I follow the steps and it looks like it is installing.
But the next time I start Outlook the same message comes up. I repeated
this three times. I restarted my computer. Then I uninstalled Connector and
downloaded from the MS website and installed. I still get the same message
when I start Outlook.

Also, frequently when asked to enter my password for my msn accounts it is
not recognized.

I was having the same problem as you so I registered here to leave you a reply because it was very frustrating. I have a hotmail address, and this solved the problem for me. The outlook connector upgrade it was downloading was apparently not the right one. There is another process called "Outlook Hotmail Connector" that I found while searching the Microsoft download site. I downloaded that instead and now my outlook connection is working again. It is available in 32bit and 64 bit versions depending on which version of outlook you have installed.

Hope this solves your problem, it did for me.

Gx34 you da man. I was googgling this issue this morning as well and came across Bill's post. In the time it took me to register and reply you had already replied with the fix. I just attempted this and it worked. But please note:

There are two versions - a 32 and 64 bit version. The version refers to the version of Office that you have, not the OS, so make sure you download the right one. Although I am running 64 bit Win7, I am running 32-bit Office 2007. So I needed the 32 bit.

Also, it appears this version is beta. The publication date is last October 2009. My spider sense says that something went on with the MS servers last night and this caused the version checking problem. Most likely they are updating the Connector to work with Office 2010. And since this existing version is beta, we'll probably need to be on the look-out for a final working version in the near future.

Thanks again Gx34!

Glad I could help. It was really annoying when I couldn't get my email to work, so I figured I would reply in case anyone else was having the same problem. Also, the version I installed has a date of 4/20/2010. I saw the October 2009 version that you are referring to, but after I did a search in the Microsoft download center site, I clicked on the "released" column twice (to sort by date, newest first) and the 4/20/2010 version is the first one in the list. I don't know why the old one shows up when you initially do the search, maybe they go by download count and the new one hasn't had enough downloads yet.

Anyway, I just though I would let you know.

Same here...with Office 2003 Professional edition. It's been work fine for a
long time until tonight I got the exact same message and tried the same fixes.
Frustrating!

The annoying thing about this is that the message that flashes up to
upgrade , if you accept and download , it retrieves version 12 of the outlook
connector .. which will always be out of date because the latest version is
14.

It didn't for me. It downloaded and installed (without problem) the latest
V14 installation.

I uninstalled Outlook connector and downloaded version 14 of Outlook Hotmail
Connector 64-bit. When I try to install it I receive two messages. The
first says, “The 32-bit version of Microsoft Outlook is installed. Download
and install the 32-bit version of Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector." The
second says, "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing
this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code
is 2869." I restarted Windows 7 and downloaded it again using a better
connection from your link and I still get the same two messages.

I just did and installed it and it seems to be working fine. So, now I'm
just curious. Why can't I run the 64 bit program since I have a 64 bit
machine?

Because you're using the 32 bit Office on that 64 bit machine, which is just
fine.

So I am making the assumption that if I run the 64 bit program, I would have
to uninstall the 32 bit Microsoft Office Professional and reinstall the 64
bit Microsoft Office Professional, right?

Thanks, for your help!

When running Windows 7 64 bit, you can install and use either Office 2010 64
bit or 32 bit and either should work. Office 64 bit, however, doesn't play
well with add-ins yet. If you don't have add-ins, you should be able to use
the 64 bit versions of Windows, Office, and the Outlook Connector and all
should work. So the combos are WIndows 64 bit, Office 64 bit, Outlook
Connector 64 bit or Windows 64 bit, Office 32 bit, and Outlook Connector 32
bit.
