You dont need the Connector to access gmail

The Outlook Connector is for use with Live Hotmail accounts. It enables you
to have a 2-way sync between your Live Hotmail account and Outlook. In
addition, it allows you to sync your calendar and contacts as well.

Privacy is not a concern and it does not apply to other mail accounts such
as from Gmail.
