Outlook changes pop3 server to local host

I've had this since I installed Office 2000 Premium on XP. Now I've installed
SP1 followed by Office 3000 Professional.

About 80% of the time, when I start Outlook, it hangs for a long time in the
middle of retrieving mail and then errors out with can't find server. If I
go to edit addresses, the system has changed the pop3 server to local host
and added /mypop3.net to the end of my user name. If I change those two
fields back, all is fine until I close Outlook. When I open it again, I'm
back to the 20% chance of success.

Any help will be appreciated.

Clue: e-mail scanning by your anti-virus software. Try disabling it.
You didn't mention which AV product you use.

Sorry about the double-post. I got an unable to complete error on both and
was about to try a third time when the first one showed up. I suppose that
may have something to do with a firewall setting.

I'm using PC-Cillan from Trend Micro, and yes it was set to scan pop3. I'll
turn it off for now and see if that helps.

Thanks for the quick response.
