That identifies to NO ONE ELSE just *what* you are using to save backups of
Outlook, and whether it runs from within Outlook or is a separate backup
program that is copying your .pst file.

Are you sure the unidentified backup add-on or program is saving the .pst to
your external hard drive?

Did you make sure this external device is powered on at the time you perform
the backup by the unidentified program? Might sound like a dumb question
but I've seen tons of users complain about a problem without realizing the
device isn't powered and ready for use.

With Outlook *not* loaded, can YOU copy the .pst file to that external hard
drive (by using Windows Explorer)?

How big is your .pst file? What file system is used on the external drive
(FAT or NTFS)? If you formatted the partition on the external hard disk
which is the drive to which you copy as FAT then 4GB is the max size for any
file in that partition.

thankyou for your help Vanguard.
i am using the Microsoft Outlook backup utility not a third party backup
program. it runs at the shutdown of outlook. (i had a mistype in my
original post...sorry)

my .pst file is 5144033KB or 5 GB if i am correct.
My verbatim external drive is 1 Terraqbyte and has 854 GB free.
My external drive is powered on and i can see it in 'My Computer'.
My other back up program which backs up 'My Documents' copies fine to the
external drive so i think it is working OK

the external drive is FAT32. i don't really know what that means nor did i
know about the 4GB size limit. but this may be the problem. How would i fix
that?

thanx again.

FAT32 file systems have a 4GB file size limit. You should be able to convert
the volume to NTFS using Windows' disk management services. See
