outlook authentication

domain environment

problem is we have a workgroup (not on domain) of 20 machines and also
have exchange accounts and ntuser accounts. after migrating from
exchange 5.5 to 2000 all users must authenticate with username domain
name and password. Before this was not the case even though machines
are not on domain.

If you don't have cached credentials to access the domain (resulting from a
login to it), it makes perfect sense that you'll be asked for them when
trying to access an Exchange mailbox. I don't know why it was working for
you before, because it shouldn't have been - you can't set up trusts between
domains and workgroups.

Personally, I'd join the computers to the domain, or create a new one with a
trust to the one on which Exchange is running. Or have people get used to
providing credentials. However, rule of thumb for me is - more than 5-10
computers (depending on use), time for a server and a domain model.
Everything gets so much easier then!
