Outlook and the netsky virus

S

Stu Katz

Hi,

One of my users recently got a warning for Norton Anti Virus stating that it
had found and infected file and put it in quarantine.

Soon after, the user tried to open Outlook and was not able to. I took a
look at his quarantine file and noticed that the file in question was his
whole outlook.pst file which was infected with the W32.Netsky.D@mm

I tried cleaning the viurs with the removal tool (as stated on symantec's
web site) but had no luck. I was able to restore most of his contacts and
e-mails, but was not able to restore whatever was saved from his last backup
to yesterday.

Is there anyway I can fix the outlook.pst file (in quarantine) so that I can
recover his e-mails??

This is more a question for Symantec if you ask me.

I'd say disconnect the PC from the computer and get the file out of the
quarantine folder. Then start Outlook and remove the infected message and
use Compact Now. Disable the Office integration of Norton. This feature is
more a hassle than good use anyway. The on-access scanner (Auto Protect)
should pick it up anyway.
