See http://www.slipstick.com/addins/services/online.htm#aol for information
on configuring Outlook (or any IMAP program) to access AOL e-mail. You'll
find the basic configuration information you need as well as a link to the
AOL help files, should you need step-by-step information to configure any
popular e-mail client to download AOL e-mail.

Did anybody reply? This is driving me crazy!!! I run my
business through Outlook - and since I switched to AOL
(yesterday - big mistake), I can't get into it!
Pardon the verbosity, but here is my dialogue with
AOL's "We're here to help you" person [cue hollow
laughter]

Please present your question, and I will be with you in

I may be with some other members at the moment, please
state your query and I will be with you
as soon as possible :)
Cherryannaustin: Hello :) I've just installed aol
for the first time on this computer - and it's driving me
nuts!!!!!
Chatagentuk063: Can you please tell me the exact problem
that you are facing?
Cherryannaustin: Email (I was just wasting time
until you got round to me) - MS Outlook
Cherryannaustin: I have my own domain. Normally, I
collect my webmail via Outlook ....
Cherryannaustin: But, since I switched to AOL, I
can't get the connection sorted out ....
Chatagentuk063: Can you please tell me if you are you
able to view normal websites?
Cherryannaustin: At first, I got an SMTP error. I
followed advice from both AOl and my web host, along the
lines of changing port number and smtp address .....
Cherryannaustin: With no luck. So then I decided
it might be more simple to let AOL set itself as default.
Cherryannaustin: Now, I can't get into Outlook at
all. The shortcuts have changed & take me straight into
my AOL mail.
Cherryannaustin: And, if i try to open outlook
from a command line, nothing happens ......
Cherryannaustin: Are you a real person?
Cherryannaustin: I ask because your reply seems to
have depended upon certain keywords in my question.
Chatagentuk063: Yes please I am human, I am sorry but as
we are not trained on third party softwares so we will be
unable to provide any technical support
Cherryannaustin: Sorry, I wasn't trying to be
funny! AOL is an ISP. It is supposed to provide an
internet connection, not
Cherryannaustin: just an email/web channel
service. However, I understand what you say about your
training. Can you advise me on where to go for advice?
Chatagentuk063: Outlook is a product of Microsoft if you
are facing any problems with it then you need to contact
the vendor of the product. AOL only allows to configure
the AOL emails in outlook, please call Microsoft tech
support for assistance, The number for Microsoft Tech
Support is 0870 601 0100
Cherryannaustin: I think it is very common to use
Outlook. There must be a source of information?
Cherryannaustin: Okey-doke {sigh}. Bye!
Chatagentuk063: Please go to Keyword:IMAP for more
information about configuring AOL emails in Outlook
Cherryannaustin: That only advises on collecting
AOL mail
Cherryannaustin: But thanks for trying.
Chatagentuk063: Thank you for calling in to us, please
come back to chat again if you have any further problems.
Goodbye :)

Grrrrr.
Honestly, I can't be the only person in the world trying
to use Outlook with AOL.
What's the answer?

Anybody? Please????
Cherryannaustin.

Diane, I'm not ignoring your reply but - as shown above -
their advice ONLY applies to picking up AOL mail. It is
not relevant to anyone who uses AOL as an ISP, but
consrquently can't access other services through Outlook
as a result.

I don't even begin to understand why "setting AOL as my
default connection" should have removed all access to
Outlook from my PC. Nor do I understand why it is so
difficult to get advice on how to configure Outlook's
connections to work with AOL (that was way back, this
morning, when I could still open Outlook!!!).

This MUST be common knowledge ..... why can't I find it??!

Arrrggghhh.

Since I didn't see my original message, I have no idea what I told you
before (assuming it wasn't a different Diane :))

Did you look in Outlook's Tools, Email accounts, view existing... select the
account and Change. Then More settings to open the advanced settings dialog.
Look in connections tab - set Outlook to use IE's dialer or LAN. This will
allow outlook to use the currently open connection. if you want outlook to
use a specific connection, select it from the list.

Is AOL installed as a bring-your-own-service plan? If so, will outlook work
if you open AOL's browser?

PS - it's easier to read replies if you post the answer or additional
comments on top. Many of us don't have time to scroll long messages of
quoted text to see a reply... I read this only because I'm bored while
waiting for SBS to install on a clients machine.
