I repaired this by going to Control Panel/Folders and updating the Adobe file
types.
but
Now 8.1.1 says the arial narrow bold font is not installed but it is and
always worked with previous versions of reader????

Thanks Pat,
After installing and uninstalling so many times I'm really not sure. I think
I did the original install right over the top of the older version.
Everything is working fine now since I went back to version 7.08? The fonts
issue is a non event now. I tried once more to upgrade to 8.1.1 and the fonts
issue with arial narrow bold came back up again.
You are right it is an Adobe problem, but I sure appreciate your expertise
outside the box.

I had massive problems installing Reader 8.xxxx because of problems on my
laptop. There are some fixes available that clean things up nicely... But you
have to search on the Adobe website for help there.
You're lucky, for me, I couldn't get past half-way when installing the
reader upgrade. I think it comes down to some "dandruff" being left behind
from past installs. It's pretty insidious how many locations things end up in
during a so-called simple install.
In general, I've found the Adobe site helpfull in fixing these issues (ran
into it with flash player install from them as well.) Sorry, I don't have the
links anymore.
