Outlook address book

S

sghalliday

Due to a problem with my computer I re-installed windows last week including
an abortive attempt to install SP3 (hung the computer). After all was done,
Outlook was behaving very slowly, partially attributed to my lack of
understanding about having a default pst not called outlook.pst.

I managed to get everything working but the program was so slow (60 second
delays on many simple tasks) that I decided to reinstall all of Office 2003
today. I have done that and outlook seems much more responsive EXCEPT I
cannot see my contacts in the address book.

There are contacts visible in the contacts pane.

I have tried to follow the help files but I have not succeeded (yet). here
is what I see. I go into the address book from a new email:

I get a select Names box. Oulook address book is in the "show names from"
drop down and I get a message that there are No entries in this address book.

I drop the "show names" choices down and I have two entries both called
Contacts. No matter which one I select I get an error box that says "The
address book could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated with this
address book could not be opened; it may have been removed or deleted, or you
do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from
the outlook address book, see Microsoft Office Oulook help"

I have followed everything in help I can see, going to the My contacts and
removing the check to make contacts available, then going to email setup and
selecting to change and address book and deleting the address book. Yet
still I have a problem.

I have even tried copying all the contacts out to another pst and then
copying them back. No change.

Can someone help me to re-attach my contacts folder into the address book in
email please

Reinstalling Outlook is unlikely to solve anything. Ever.
Instead, you should have created a new Outlook profile, especially since by
your description you corrupted your current one by migrating your Outlook
data incorrectly. Your default PST file can be named anything you want, so
your assertion makes no sense.
Once you create a new profile and connect it properly to your data file, you
still need to follow the well documented steps to configure your Outlook
Address Book view.
Instructions for doing all these things are posted here every day.

Russ:

Thanks for your help. As a long time user of Microsoft office BUT a very
short time user of Outlook, I had not appreciated some of the things you have
stated. If as you stated these questions are asked everyday, then maybe you
need a "sticky" entry in the forum that keeps the answers to this at the top
of the sheet. I have seen this in other forums I use.

I have done as you suggested, ctreated a new profile, moved my mail folders
over to the new pst, copied my calendar and contacts over (I don't think this
was stated in your instructions) and the link to the contacts in the address
book now works BUT.

In my original profile I had hundreds of rules. I don't seem to be able to
get these into the new profile. I tried going back and exporting from the
old profile. It did this but gave me an error at the end of the export when
I tried to quit the menu selection (it said that several of the rules were
not propoerly specified and these would be disabled - this would be right as
the folders no longer exist in the profile)

When I import this .rwz file into the new profile, everything comes up
disabled and with incorrect references. How do I solve this problem.
recreating the rules is a massive exercise. Going through them one at a time
is also a massive exercise. there must be a way to import rules from another
profile. The folders are correct in this new profile BUT the rules obviously
point to something different!

Please help

No one posting here has any control over how the newsgroups appear to you.
You are using the brain-dead web interface to the newsgroup. Use a real
newsreader and accessing the group (and finding things) will be easier.
Also, Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/) can find anything posted in
any newsgroup in a matter of seconds to minutes.

How rules transfer is a function of the version in which the rules were
created. How rules are stored has changed. In current versions rules are
stored with the PST file and will transfer if you migrate the PST file
correctly. However it will still be necessary to step through each rule so
you can reset them to the PST file's new location.
In the final analysis, the hoops one must jump through to migrate Outlook
data correctly from one version to another are a counterintuitive maze.
Microsoft should be embarrassed for putting its users through these
contortions. The bad news is that even an in place upgrade doesn't work for
Outlook, so no one can escape this painful experience.

thanks for the comment. As I suspected I am left with hand changing over
