I just bought a new vista basic computer and want to import a file from my
old vista basic computer. The new computer does not recognize the pst file
as a pst file. The software is the same, the operating system is the same,
and every aspect of the properties are the same, but between the old file and
the new one for my pc, the new pst file is not recognized as a pst file. How
do I import this information?

D

DL

You dont, import that is, you copy the pst file to your new PC, documents
folder, then open it from within Outlook
If you still receive the err msg, then your method of copying was at fault

S

steve

What is the method of copying that will work...I've tried about 10 different
approaches and none of them have worked.

D

DL

Outlook has to be closed, copy the pst to a memory stick, from stick to PC,
open within Outlook
If you used cd to copy, the read only flag at the destination pst has to be
turned off

S

steve

Okay, I don't know what a memory stick is. I copied it onto a dvd + rw and
made sure the read only flag was off. I also tried using a pc-pc cable
called the tornado, and uploaded the file to the internet from the old pc and
downloaded it to the new pc. Should any of these have worked?

D

DL

If the read only flag was off, it should have been ok, maybe the problem is
with the burning software
Memory stick, often refered to as Thumb Drive, or usb stick

Are you able to network the PC's?

S

steve

Networking them is the only thing I haven't tried yet. I have a downloaded
file fro the internet with a message about blocking and other security stuff
could any of that be a problem?

what program did you download?
how large is the pst file you copied?

Close outlook on the old computer, network the two computers and drag the
pst file to the new computer. If you don't have a router you can use a
crossover network cable to connect the two.

Try a copy to cd, use slowest write speed, do a straight copy and not use
write software that allows you to add files to the cd at a later date
(forget the exact terminology)
Copy the file to Documents folder, check properties of the file & turn off
read only flag (Do not overwrite any existing pst)
Open the file within Outlook

S

steve

I don't think this is normal. I used a network called wd anywhere (because I
had it). When I try to open the file directly from explorer, I get an error
message "cannot start ms office outlook. the cammand line argument is not
valid. verify the switch you are using" This happens essentially if outlook
is open or not. When I go into outlook and open the file in the networked
drive, it says it is not a pst file. However, this same file is fully
operational in the other computer. The file is 800mg.

This all started out very innocently, when I bought a new computer and
wanted to move my files over from the old one. I may not be very smart, but
I think something is wrong with this picture. It isn't supposed to be so
difficult that I spend 4 FULL days trying to do this and nothing else. At
some time you have to evaluate MS products in general as far as their
reliability is concerned, throw out vast amounts of usable data (?!?!) and
start using alternative products. Can someone tellme in english what is
happening here?

It is an 800mg file, so it won't go onto a cd. I used a dvd + rw, and the
old computer says it is not a writable disc. It will not let me download
anything onto it. Then I go over to my new computer with the exact same disc
and download a pst file onto it with no trouble. what's up with this?

S

steve

ps. I downloaded other files onto another dvd + rw from t he same batch
earlier on in the week, no problems. Not I can't use any of the 25 dvd +rw's
from this batch on the old computer, but they all work on the new one...

D

DL

If you are saying this batch of DVD's wont work on your old PC, then its
something to do with the specific type of dvd and your dvd drive & or
burning software.
Personnally I've not used a cd/dvd disk for this type of operation for some
time now, instead using a thumb drive/memory stick.

Is outlook closed on the old computer? Close it and reboot. Now connect the
computers and drag the pst over to the new computer. If it still doesn't
work either you are working with the wrong pst or the transfer process is
corrupting the pst.
