Outlook 2007 SP1 - 2 problems

ashforma

The installation details: Outlook 2007 SP1 with Business Contact Manager;
Vista Ultimate, fully up to date with all Microsoft Patches.

1: Outlook will beeps when receiving some types of message, usually with
HTML content, of which I get a lot. The problem is I have an entertainment
speaker system up for playing my music and the beeps are quite loud.

Frankly the beeps spook me!! How can I stop this beeping? It seems to have
started with the last updates for Outlook so the problem is only a couple of
weeks old.

2: when I close Outlook normally, I get a message that "Outlook has stopped
working" I then get a message that "Outlook is restarting", if I let it
continue Outlook will reload, which is not what I want.

This problem also is new, within the last 2 weeks and started around the
same time as the beeping!

The crash on an Outlook shutdown suggests an addin issue.
Which addins do you have installed?
Does it work correctly in Outlook Safe Mode?
Start-> type; outlook.exe /safe

Depending on what the addin does, the beeping could be related to that as
well.
Verify that you have your sound disable for incoming emails;
Tools-> Options-> E-mail Options-> Advanced E-mail Options-> Play a sound
In addition you could also have configured a rule that plays a sound when
certain conditions are met.

Hi,

There is one disabled addin, pdfmoutlook.dll, windows said it had trouble
with it and wanted to disable it, so I let it and left it that way.

In the same time frame, I removed the Adobe Acrobat addin for all office
2007 products by changing the configuration in the Control Panel. I have
Adobe Acrobat 8 standard installed. As Office can create PDFs I decided to
remove it, I noticed a big performance boost.

I will try the safe switch.

Confirmed, "Feedback with Sound" is unchecked.

I will continue monitoring the forum

Hi,

Gotcha, it was checked and is now unchecked.

The sound is not played when each new email arrives, only the odd one. I get
between 150 and 200 + emails a day but may only get beeping 10 or 12 times
during that time.

BTW, the addins I removed were all Microsoft, Groove, SharePoint, a
Microsoft Indexing utility.

Still getting the beeping, even with the Play Sound when new items arrive in
Inbox is unchecked.

Can you see similarities between the emails causing a beep?
-always from the same sender
-is Junk Email
-from a specific mail account
-etc...

Are these messages delivered to the Inbox or sorted to another folder?

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out the answer to your questions since it
started.

The email causing the beep is not "trapped" or recorded so I can figure it
out.

My impression is that it is valid email from a valid sender.

My Anti virus/mail scanner has not trapped any virus laden files. I
uninstalled it and tried another brand with the same results so I have gone
back to the old anti virus.

I have Outlook Junk mail Off as it gave too many false positives. I use
Spamfighter to catch spam, I have used it for 3 years now with no issue,
Outlook seems happy with it.

To be honest while I am working I have the sound well up, hey there at 53
no-one is going to tell me to turn it down. When the beep happens it is
louder than the music and it is a total surprise, a case of "holy cr#p" and
any messages on screen etc are long gone by the time I recover.
