Outlook 2007 Running in Background - Can it be changed to not run?

Outlook 2007 seems to run in the background all the time. I would like to
stop Outlook from running in the background to free up memory, CPU time and
to permit the copying of the PST folders to my backup hard drive. I can't do
the backup now because the PST is open and locked even though Outlook is not
visibly running. Outlook does not show up in Task Manager as an open
program. I am using XP if that makes a difference in anyone's reply.

If you do not see OUTLOOK.EXE on the Processes tab of Task Manager, then
it's not running. Do you have a desktop search engine going or a PDA
cradled?

Windows desktop search is always running.
I used Google Desktop search with Office XP but it would only search the pst
files when Outlook was open. Google still only searches when the pst is
opened in Outlook.
WD must open the files (?).
If so, how can I change this. Uninstall WD I would guess.
