Outlook 2007 PST query

I just deleted about 500 randomly dated, e-mails from my inbox, and
then emptied my deleted items folder. Then, for reasons of safety, I
used the backup tool to create a backup PST, in advance of compacting
my PST.

I then compacted my PST. However, I notice that the new PST, after
exiting Outlook, is the same size in kilobytes as the backup PST
file. Shouldn't it be smaller? In other words, doens't compacting
make it smaller?

Thanks!

You have to delete a significant amount, before Compact shows any size
differential
Compacting doesnt create a new pst
You compare the size prior to compact with that after compact for the same

I was comparing a backup of the PST just before compacting to the PST
after compacting. In any event, I get your point. I would have
thought 500 e-mails would make a difference, but it seems not.
Thanks!
