Outlook 2007 - newbie questions

1) How do I enable/disable grouping of mails ?
I know you can change it in "View -> Current Display -> Adjust
display" but that ONLY works for the selected folder and not others or
even subfolders.

2) When selecting a folder from the navigation, the active selection
changes to the first item in that folder (the one with mails sorted
and columns). How do prevent that ?

3) Using an exchange server, what must to done to fetch contacts on
the server to my client ?

3a) Why cant (or where do) I edit my own contact profile? I can open
it, but not edit.

1) Yes, that is correct behavior since you change the Current View, so the
folder you are looking at, and not the general view template. To change the
template go to View-> Current View-> Define Views-> Messages-> Edit

2) What are you expecting to select it instead?

3) You mean the Global Address List? That is cached automatically when you
have Cached Exchange Mode enabled which is the default for new Exchange
accounts.

3a) Ask you domain admin about the security settings in your domain and what
is and what isn't allowed to be edited by users.

Thanks for your time and answers.

1) I have done that earlier too, but no luck. It still only applies to
the folder selected.
Must I restart Outlook for the effect to take place on the rest of the
folders ?

2) I expected it to remain active in the place where I clicked.
Meaning the "Mail folders" area, and not the area which shows the
content of that folder.

3) When I click on "To:" I get access to a global address list.
When clicking on Outlooks "Contacts" flat-tab I see nothing. Is that
normal ?
Also, I tried to fetch contacts store on the exchange server via
"Functions -> Send/Receive mail -> Get address library". A window pops
up, and I select "Detailed information". I uncheck the checkbox to
fetch all information, and in the address library section can I only
select "Get offline address library". I hit Ok.
I get an error message, code 0x8004010F "Action failed. Object not
found". Is this related to the security issue you mentioned ?

Where do I see what "Cached Exchange Mode" I have ?

3a) So this is a domain issue and not an Exchange security issue ? If
yes, lets assume Im a domain admin, where should I change the setting
to allow users to change their own contact information ?

1) Yes, that is correct behavior since you change the Current View, so the

1) It will only apply to folders that are still configured in the default
Messages view. To bring all folder back to their original view start Outlook
with the cleanviews switch;
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /cleanviews

2) If you want to toggle the active selection between panes you can use F6
or SHIFT+F6

3) That is normal if you don't have any contacts in your Contacts folder.
The error has got nothing to do with security settings but if your mail
admin has configured an Offline Address List for the GAL.
You can verify your CEM settings by opening your Exchange account
configuration via Tools-> Account Settings...

3a) It's not an issue but a configuration decision; big difference ;-)
Security on user objects can be set in Active Directory Users & Computers.

Thanks for your help.

1) I still cannot get Outlook 2007 to show emails in folders as
Outlook 2000 did - aka no fancy grouping.
Yes, I can turn off grouping, but for EACH folder? No thanks.

3) My account has CEM enabled (checkbox is checked)

4) I talked to our domain admin and he said there is no configuration
he can do. Do you have some articles I can direct him to ?

You can turn it off for all folders that use a particular view my modifying
the view.
