Outlook 2007 modifying HTML

I create a newsletter for a company. At first I coded it by hand and
inserted it into my email client, Mozilla Thunderbird. The code looked
fine in all browsers and in TB. I sent the email to the client, who
sent the email to others. Outlook re-coded the email and completely
screwed it up. We tried a lot of options but nothing changed, every
time the coding messed up the formatting (CSS).

This month I thought I would send them an HTML file, with images linked
remotely. Outlook recoded the file, and messed it up again.

Is there a setting in Outlook to prevent this from happening? They are
using MSO 2007.

Outlook 2007 has no support for CSS positioning and background images.
I generally do not recommend using CSS in email design - Instead use
inline styling with the style attribute as an alternative to the
<STYLE> tag in the head of your HTML.

I actually tend to think that God doesn’t really need you, me, our
talents, or our time, to do His work.  Think about it, a weekend
service at The Crossing without any of the Creative Arts people.
 No band, no Powerpoint, no cool lighting… What if a staggered
service had to have a five minute coffee break in the middle because
things weren’t started on time… Would we still be able to have a
service?  Could Tim turn on the sound system and a microphone to be
able to speak? Would God still be able to reach people?  I think so.
<br><br>
The really crazy cool thing here is that in doing all these things
(sound, drama, video, etc) we actually get to use our talents to partner
WITH God to reach people.  He could do it without any of us, but He
invites us to be a part.
<br><br>
That completely changes our attitude of serving, doesn’t it?  We’re
not doing God a favor. We’re not here out of guilt.  We’re not
entitled to anything. We’re here to be used how God wants to use us.
 And trust me on this, His plan for us is way different than our
own plans.
<br><br>

brand new singers) about his story on the first weekend he served here.
 It’s so great.  I don’t have room to tell it here, so ask him…

Hi Diane,

They didn't "use" anything. The first newsletter I sent as an email.
The sent the email as "new" and Outlook put it's touches on it and
ruined it. The second newsletter was given to them as an HTML "file".
They sent the attached file out and Outlook again decided to recode the
document.

Beside adding hundreds of lines of useless code, the tables turned out
relatively okay. But the CSS code I inserted was completely screwed up.

Maybe your HTML isn't very complicated and Outlook doesn't stumble. But
it does a lousy job of handling CSS.

doesn't obey CSS like a web browser does. You want to read this:

more and more coding. Because OL/W doesn't "obey" CSS, it's just not
supposed to be used?

It's not an Outlook rendering problem per se. Hardly everyone uses OL.
It renders great on many different clients I tried sending it to, only
MS clients can't render it.

And sending an HTML file I thought would allow everyone to view the
"proper rendering" in a browser. But since OL decided it needed to
improve the code, the rendering was a disaster for the CSS coding.

Are you saying I'm lying? Outlook DID change it. I sent the file. They
saved the file to their Desktop and then attached via an Outlook email.
And the results are what you can see in the paste I gave to Pat. I
opened the source on the original and the attachment sent by OL and you
can see for yourself what OL did to the attached file.

Brian,

I just sent the HTML file to my email at that company and opened it in
OL. I saved the file to the Desktop and opened it in IE and Notepad.
It was not modified and displayed as coded. I then sent the file back
to myself and checked the file again. It was not modified.

I am going to have to physically watch them go through the motions next
time, to see what is causing the issue.

I can only say it's happened twice, and both times I've given them
instructions on what to do. Why the code was changed the first time,
and then the HTML file was modified this time, I can't say.

I will report back when I learn more.

Hi Pat,

I instructed them to save the file to their Desktop from my email, and
then to send it out in OL as an attachment. They didn't open it in
Word, that's my point. Since OL uses Word for composing and rendering,
that's where I thought the issue was.

I will hopefully meet with the ones sending out the email so I can
monitor exactly what they're doing, or find out where my file is getting
hi-jacked and re-coded.

Hi Pat,

I have researched this further. Outlook re-codes any HTML email on
Reply or Forward. I have tested this multiple times and the results are
the same every time.

I sent the hand coded HTML email to the client. When the source is
viewed on receipt in OL, it is coded as I sent it.

When the email is replied to or forwarded, OL re-codes the entire email.
And since Word is the composer in OL, the output is twice the size and
the code gets broken.

Regarding the attached HTML file being re-coded, some email clients
display attachments inline. And a text document or HTML attachment will
not even appear as an attachment, but as part of the message body. The
client uses a web database program for selecting recipients. During
that process, the attachment is read as an HTML email rather than a
separate attachment, and then the Word Editor destroys the code.

Is there any way to stop this? I looked through the options but can't
find anything.

The real joke is that in the "Mail Format" tab, there is the checked
option, "Reduce the file size of the message by removing formatting
information that is not necessary to display the email message". And
here Word is doubling the size of the file and corrupting the code.
