Outlook 2007 loads Word 2003 instead of Word 2007

I have been running Office Enterprise 2007 including Outlook 2007 for a few
weeks, generally without problems. (Outlook 2003 was removed when 2007 was
installed, but the rest of Office 2003 is still on the machine.) However,
over the last couple of days, when I launch Outlook 2007, Windows Installer
pops up and tries to install Word 2003 (presumably as the native Outlook
editor). If I hit "cancel", the installation diag box still pops up a couple
of times before it goes away. How can I stop this? Coincidentally (or maybe
not), this has only happened since an automatic update that included updates
for Outlook and Office 2007 and Windows XP -- KB932338, KB931784, KB890830,
KB931261, KB932080, KB932330, KB930178, and KB932168.

I am tempted just to remove Word 2003 from the machine but don't want to
muck things up. Any help would be appreciated.

Outlook 2007 has its own editor and is not linked to Word 2003. Apparently
there is some sort of corruption on your system that the installer tries to
fix. Instead of cancelling the dialog let it complete. Another way to go
would be to simply remove Office 2003 if you do no longer use it.

Why would the corruption start all of a sudden?

That could be a long list of answers but it happens more often when mixing
versions.

I figured out the problem: KB932330 relates to Outlook 2003. It had been
automatically installed as part of automatic updates. Once I uninstalled
that update, no more problems. HOWEVER, uninstalling it was a pain, since I
had to reinstall Outlook 2003 to do it - add/remove programs kept looking for
Office 2003 installation files that needed the installation CD, and once
those were installed Outlook 2003 was back on the machine. Then I needed to
uninstall Outlook 2003 again. All of which says to me, "Since Microsoft
urges you to use automatic updates, why can't Microsoft's software tell
whether you have a program installed and not install the update if the
program isn't installed?"
