Outlook 2007 Instant Search Problem After Installing SP2

I have installed Office 2007 SP2 on both my home and work computers (Vista
SP2) and I am finding that search queries within Outlook 2007 are much slower
than when I was Pre-SP2. It is almost as slow as if indexing is not enabled.

I am using Outlook 2007 in cached exchange mode with an Exchange 2003 server
on Windows Server 2003 at work.

At home, I am using Outlook 2007 with POP accounts and PSTs (different email
account than my work email).

I am using version 4 of WDS on both computers.

This problem appears to manifest itself when I use the "Try searching again
in All Mail Items" option. Searches within the current folder are still
relatively instant.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have taken:
1. Recreated the OST file and then rebuilt my index on my work computer.
But, this did not help.
2. Verified that Outlook shows under the "Indexing Options" in WDS and that
my mailbox is correctly selected.
3. The Indexing Options interface indicates that my indexing is complete, so
the computer is still not in the process of indexing.
4. Uninstalled antivirus, but didn't help.
5. Tried Outlook 2007 SP2 on a fresh installation of Windows 7 and had the
same problem - so the problem is not a third party related software and is
specifically with Outlook.
6. Temporarily uninstalled SP2 and the problem went away - so it is
definitely a problem with SP2.

I had no problems with search queries before SP2 - all search queries were
nearly "instant".

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Thanks.

I'VE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OUTLOOK 2003 AND MY COWORKER WITH
2007. OUR IT PEOPLE CAN'T SEEM TO FIX IT EITHER. THIS MUST BE A MICROSOFT
GLITCH.

squirlygirl: Have you always had this problem? If not, it may not be
related to the problem I am having since I only started to have this problem
after installing Office 2007 SP2. If you have always had this problem, one
common problem is that WDS does not index if you are not using cached
Exchange mode in Outlook. If this is the case, you need to enable a WDS
Group Policy to allow WDS to begin indexing Outlook (both 2003 and 2007)
while not in cached Exchange mode (aka "online" mode).

hi,

i also know about this problem, i also heard from a few peole about that issue....
the only thing i know is a rollback on SP1... but this is no great solution (SP2 is senseful if you think on other bugs which are fixed with that SP)

but you should change to an external search tool for your outlook, that was my way to solve the problem.
i found this tool: Lookeen
after install it indexed my whole outlook in about 20 min. (about 10000 items), but that depends also on the speed of your pc. the real amazing thing is the speed of search with this tool. every search needs about 1 or 2 seconds until the results are displayed. and the result are sorted in groups. you´ll find your mails or attachments or anything very very fast.

i only can recommend Lookeen from now on.

My problem is that after installing SP2, the "Search All Items" returns zero
results. If I search individual folders, everything works.

I've rebuilt the index

Suggestions?

Mike:

Thanks for responding.

1. I used safe mode and Outlook searches are just as slow. Based upon your
statement, I wonder if Outlook is incorrectly using Outlook search instead of
WDS after installing SP2?
2. Using Explorer to search for files in deep folder structures remains fast
(it was always fast and so was Outlook searching until SP2).
3. The only store I have selected is my single primary store.

Also, there are a few other people who have reported this problem:

Please let me know what else I can do.

Thanks.

Hello Mike!

1. Outlook performs searches as I type - I do not have to press enter to
initiate the search.
2. The Windows Search service is started. Note that WDS indexes my files
perfectly fine. It also indexes my emails perfectly fine since I am able to
perform lightning fast queries in my Windows Explorer window. But, Outlook
is very slow.
3. Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (12.0.6504.5000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000)

I will get perform the troubleshooting steps you've requested on Wednesday
of next week.

Thanks!

Hello Mike! I followed the troubleshooting steps you outlined and the
Outlook searches were still slow. So, as you requested, I emailed you a copy
of the Process Explorer output. I also emailed you a link to the Process
Monitor output during the search in case that will help reveal anything.

Regarding the keys are asked me to verify were empty after disabling all
Outlook COM add-ins and exchange client extensions:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions
Did not exist

2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Add-ins
Deleted Search.OutlookToolbar

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Add-ins
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook" did not exist

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions -
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client" did not exist

5. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Add-ins
Deleted:
AccessAddin.DC
ColleagueImport.ColleagueImportAddin
OLSideShow.Addin
UmOutlookAddin.FormRegionAddin

Let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks.
