Outlook 2007 hogs resources and causes other programs to hang

I am using the trial version of Office 2007, with problems only with Outlook.
When Outlook is download mail, other programs seem to hang. Likewise,
Outlook will seem to freeze when I try to open or delete mail before download
is totally complete.

For information, I have a complete 64 bit computer :: 64 bit
motherboard/processor and Windows XP Pro x64. I have core duo 3.0 processors
and 2 gb of ram.

I have disabled all addins, including the search index.

With this type of system there should be no hangups or hogging of resources.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make Outlook work more
efficiently?

You are not alone, I've blogged about this on several occasions.

There seems to be a specific problem with POP3 mail. See:
