outlook 2007 distribution list

I have a contact list with 1500 names in it and I want to make several
smaller distribution lists from it. Is the best way to do this to create a
new distribution list, choose the names from the drop down list and create a
new list remembering where you left off, then creating a second list, and so
on? If so, how many names can go into one list. Secondly, once I create my
list I can't see it in my contacts, is there some setting I need to change?
And, finally is this the best way to send out emails to all these people on
the list?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Don't bother with distribution lists - use Categories instead.

Gordon's advice is the best approach. If your DL in in Active Directory and
visible in the Global Address List (you're using Exchange), you can't split it
without the AD administrator's help. To split a distribution list in a
Contacts folder into two DLs, display your Contacts folder, right-click the DL
and drag it slightly. Release the mouse button and choose Copy. You'll now
have two DLs with exactly the same name. Open the first (original one) and
delete the second half of the member list. Save and Close. Open the second
(the copy), give it a new name, and delete the first half of the member list
(the portion you did NOT delete form the original list). Save and close.
You've now split your original list into two. You can follow the same
approach to split it into any number of smaller DLs, but categories are, for
the most part, more flexible.

If you elect to use categories and with to send a message to everyone in a
particular category, display your Contacts in the By Category view, select all
the members of the category, then click Actions>New Message to Contact.

Don't even need to do that - just select the Category name.
