The default behavior of POP (Post Office Protocol) is to send a RETR
(retrieve) command to get the e-mail followed by a DELE (delete) command to
erase it from your mailbox (up on the server). That means once your POP
client retrieves your new e-mails, they are no longer up on the server.
Some folks like to read their e-mails using different e-mail clients on
different hosts, like at work verus home or when travelling with their
laptop. Some users like to keep their e-mails on the server for awhile as a
backup. They may run a local backup on their host every N days which means
e-mails received between those backups would get lost if they had to perform
a restore from the prior backup. However, if they're still on the server
then they can re-retrieve them (since they will look like new e-mails when
the data files for the e-mail client are restored). When using Gmail, it
doesn't follow the RFCs for POP but instead has its own variant of POP, like
a server-side option deciding what to do with retrieved e-mails rather than
using the commands sent from the e-mail client. I'm sure there are other
reasons for using the "leave messages on server" option (which eliminates
the DELE command sent to the POP server).
