Outlook 2003 with IMAP and no Exchange?

Hello!

I'm trying to use Outlook 2003 with my IMAP mail account. There are
however several problems with this that I don't seem to be able to
solve. And I suspect that they are all related to the fact that I am
using an IMAP account and don't use any Exchange servers.

Firstly, once I have set up my IMAP account it is listed in the
navigation pane just below the "Personal Folders" folder. If I use my
new account to compose and send an e-mail, the sent e-mail gets placed
in the "Sent Items" subfolder of "Personal Folders" instead of the "Sent
Items" in my IMAP account. How do I change this?

Secondly, I haven't figured out just how to delete messages in my IMAP
account. If I press delete on a message, its subject line is struck out.
It does however seem impossible to actually delete the messages. Event
if I move them to my IMAP "Thrash" folder I can't seem to get rid of
them. Only if I move them to the "Deleted Items" in "Personal Folders" I
can choose to empty the "Deleted Items". This is neither very logical
(moving messages to a different account) nor practical (having to drag
and drop instead of just pressing delete). Is there some setting I
haven't discovered?

Finally, since I don't use the "Personal Folders", I would like to
remove them all together. Since I only use an IMAP account and no
Exchange account, why would I need the "Personal Folders"? I haven't
been able to figure out any way to get rid of it though. Any tips?

Best regards
David Olsson

First, disable the option to save copies of messages in Sent Items. Then
create a rule that moves a copy of all outgoing messages to the Sent Items
folder of the IMAP account.
Secondly, I haven't figured out just how to delete messages in my IMAP

Click Edit>Purge Deleted Messages. IMAP doesn't have trash folders.

You can't. An IMAP folder set cannot be specified at the default delivery
location, so you'll need a set of folders for that.
Since I only use an IMAP account and no
Exchange account, why would I need the "Personal Folders"?

For the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Journal, and Notes you might want. IMAP
servers contain mail only. They don't store contacts, appointments, or
anything that's not mail. If you need none of that stuff, why are you using
Outlook? Outlook Express supports IMAP, too, and in many respects, better
than Outlook (in my opinion, anyway). So does Pine, Mozilla Thunderbird,
Netscape Communicator, Eudora, and other free or commercial mail agents.

Thanks for the help! A few follow up questions though.

Ok, can I connect the "Personal folders" to my IMAP account so the inbox
under "personal folders" contain my IMAP mail?

Sure, but only Outlook (not express) can synchronize against my windows
mobile cell phone... :)

I already answered that. No. You can't even move the messages
automatically from the IMAP's Inbox to the Personal Folders Inbox without a
third-party rules engine.

That's a good reason.
