Outlook 2003 startup so slow

Waiting

Takes 5-6 minutes for Outlook 2003 just to startup. Didn't used to be that
slow. What could be the problem? Have archived old emails and cleaned up
folders. What else?
 
If you open Outlook in safe mode, is it just as slow?

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe
(note the space between outlook.exe and /safe)

If you use Vista, Start > Search run > outlook.exe /safe
(same space between outlook.exe and /safe)
 
Don't know about safe mode - what is that?
