Outlook 2003 Sent Items

I am using Outlook 2003, SP3. I have it configured to save copies of sent
messages in the Sent Items folder. However, now Outlook retains a copy for
about a day, then deletes all items from the Sent Items folder. Outlooks is
running on my system 24/7, so it is not a problem occuring only when Outlook
is shut down.

Is this a known issue - I can't seem to find any references in the
Knowledgebase about the problem. Any suggestions on how can I stop this
deletion process?

Two ideas: (1) check your views to find out if the message are still there
but your View settings filter them; and (2) check your archive settings to
see if you've configured it to archive daily (in which case, you emails are
in the archive.pst).

JoeO: thanks for the response. To my knowledge, I had not changed any
settings related to Views or archiving when this problem started occuring.
The Sent Items folder is visible and the properties for that folder actually
show 'Do Not Archive...' as being checked. I am current on all MS updates and
have SP3 installed. I am at a loss.

Which view are you looking at? Turn on the Advanced Toolbar and the Current
View window will show the name of the View.

Judy: thank you for replying, but I'm not sure I understand the relevence of
your suggestion. Can you elaborate, please? I have always had both the
Standard and Advanced Tool Bars 'on'. I have the 3 vertical panels option in
use - a list of folders in the left column, the contents of the selected
folder, and finally the Auto preview panel. The list of folders show the
'Sent Items' folder. Selecting it shows any items I've sent today, but
everything sent previously is no longer visible as contents in that folder.
My list does not show an Archive folder, but I have archiving turned OFF for
the Sent Items folder.

On the Advanced toolbar is a window which shows the name of the Current
View. This is the only window in that toolbar. It may for example say Sent
to or Last 7 Days. Many of the views you can see of each Folder (not just
sent items) are filtered ie they HIDE things from you!

Float your cursor along the Advanced Toolbar slowly and the tooltips will
tell you what each button in called (unless you turned tooltips off).

I do appreciate the suggestions, folks. I reviewed ALL settings in Outlook
again this morning. I have no rules defined. I have the Advanced Toolbar
displayed at all times. I can see the Sent Items folder in the list of
folders. Last evening there were 3 sent messages visible in the Sent Items
folder. This morning there are no messages in the folder. I did not delete
them. I did not move them. Outlook was not closed during the night - even by
accident or power outage. Outlook or some other force in the universe is
simply erasing, deleting, moving ... whatever ... any messages in the Sent
Items folder every 24 hours. Maybe I need to look at Thunderbird again ...

So WHAT VIEW are you looking at? Can you please tell us that basic bit of
data? It's the Current View window in the Advanced toolbar - read the words
in it. What does it say you are looking at?

Judy: the VIEW is "Messages" (I've tried them all). Auto archiving is OFF.
In the E-Mail Options, the "Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder" is
checked ON.

Still, every night all messages in the Sent Items folder are somehow
deleted. There can be 10 messages in the folder when I leave the computer for
the night (I do not shut the computer off, nor do I shut Outlook down), and
the next morning all of the messages will be gone. I have looked at every
setting I can find for the folder and for Outlook. I cannot see any setting
which might cause this to happen. Even though archiving is OFF, I have
searched for a .PST file and the only one on my hard drive is for Calendar
and it is over a year old.

As I said before, I'm running Outlook 2003, SP3.
