Outlook 2003. Sending through wrong account!

J

John Cooper

Hi all

I have a rather strange problem sending emails.

I have about 5 email accounts setup. My main account is set as
default.

When I create an email from scratch and send it, it's being sent
through one of my other accounts - not the default account. I've even
tried selecting the account to be used but still it sends via one of
the other accounts

I've also removed the account from the send receive process - same
problem!

The only way I've managed to correct the issue is by deleting the
account and then my email sends properly through my default account!

Any ideas?

Regards

John

Have you installed SP-1 of Outlook 2003? If so, try setting that default
account up to authenticate to the outgoing server (on the account dialog,
click "More Settings...", then go to the "Outgoing Server" tab). There
seems to be a problem in the SP that causes Outlook to move on to the next
account in the list if an server rejects a message recipient because you
aren't authenticated to it.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, I have installed Office SP1.

I've now made the ammendments as suggested and I guess it's 'wait &
see'

Many thanks

I followed your instructions but the problem persisted - sending
through the wrong account!

So I deleted the account and all seems fine EXCEPT!

I use a backup program Genie-Pro 5. When an error occurs an 'Error
reporting page' appears, similar to that of Microsoft's error
reporting.

I enter the details of the error and click SEND, immediately I receive
an error messaeg in my inbox stating the message was undeliverable
and on inspection is shows that the message was being sent to the
deleted email account!!

Most odd but not a big issue.

Thanks for the help

John

I'm having this same problem. Just installed SP-1. My default account is
already authenticating to the outgoing server, but still the problem occurs.
Any other fixes?

Thanks,

Adam

I'm watching this thread for an answer too. Same (very irritating)
problem.

Hello,

We are investingating this issues as well and have confirmed it is a bug in
outlook 2003 sp1. outlook when it failes to authenticate to a pop server
will simply send the email to any other email account that has a smtp server
it can relay the mail through.

You're right. I've got a fix for this in testing, and hopefully it will be
released as a hotfix.

Jeff,

If you have posted the hotfix, where do I find it?

The problem started for me about a week ago, long after I'd installed
Outlook SP1. Right now I can not think of anything that I have changed in
Outlook that would trigger the problem.

Thanks,

We decided not to issue a hotfix, because it wouldn't really do you any
good. Once you'd applied it, your mail through the affected account would
start bouncing (you'd get non-delivery reports) and you'd have to set up
authentication to your outgoing server to send mail. But setting up
authentication solves the problem you're hitting *without* the hotfix as
well, so everybody saves time without the hotfix.

Are you authenticating to your outgoing server? It's possible that your
ISP just started requiring authentication without notifying you (wouldn't
be the first time it's happened...).

Jeff,

Here's why your hotfix is important for me...

I consult for 3 different companies, and have a POP email account setup on
each of their servers. At least once a month, one of the company's ISP
server farts out and spits back the relaying denied error on emails sent to
other domains only. This is not due to non-authentication, or any other
setting in Outlook. We then need to contact them to restart their email
server, and it fixes it.

The problem is, I have no idea that there is a problem. I'll send an email,
and have no idea anthing is wrong becasue Outlook sends it out using the
email address I have for my other client. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM FOR ME.
Sorry for the yelling, but it is.

I would much rather the email bounce and receive the relaying denied message
than send it out using another email address.

Please help!
