Outlook 2003 over VPN

J

Jim

Here is our setup:

Windows XP / 2000 Pro Users with Outlook 2003

Remote Connection: Microsoft builtin PPTP VPN w/ Broadband
Connection

Corporate Env: Windows 2000 Server and Exchange 2000
Server.

Problem: Many users complain that their Outlook does not
work after connecting over VPN. Offline is opening fine.
Outlook just hangs and becomes unresponsive. Tried all
tricks - recreating profile, repairing, reinstalling etc.

Also when tested using Dialup connection - Outlook Opens
fine. Checked all settings and all looks okay.

VPN connecting alright and client able to ping Exchange
server via name and also IP address.

Also tried after putting in entry of Exchange server in
host file but does not work.

No user ever complained about outlook 2000/02 only
happening with Outlook 2003 and over VPN with Broadband
connection.

Does anybody have seen this and/or have solution?

Thanks in advance

Couple of things you need to be aware of...

1) Outlook 2003 name resolution is based more on DNS than WINS. Make sure
that clients are getting the correct DNS/WINS entries when establishing a
VPN connection. (ping by ip, netbios name, and fqdn. also use nbtstat to
check netbios name resolution)

If you need to see where Outlook 2003 is getting stuck on connection (e.g.
connecting to GC or IS), don't forget to start Outlook with the /rpcdiag
command line switch. Might give some clues as to what it is trying to do.

2) Outlook 2003 can use Kerberos authentication. Some VPN solutions don't
like it (haven't heard of MS's solution throwing a fit, but ya never know.)
Set authentication on the outlook profile to NTLM only and see if it helps.
