Outlook 2007 can't connect to exchange server through VPN

I have Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003. When I am on the same LAN as
the exchange server i have no issues connecting through Outlook to my
exchange account. When i connect from home or on the road through the
VPN client it fails to connect to the exchange server. I can ping the
exchange server with no issue (i have an entry in the hosts file for
the exchange server), and i can connect to all other network resources
through the VPN. I can also successfully resolve the exchange account
through the Outlook properties/Email accounts. When i start Outlook
it waits about 2 mins and then tells me it connect connect to the
Exchange server. I have repaired Office 2007, Removed and Reinstalled
Office 2007, started Outlook in Safe Mode, Disabled all Add-ins, all
to no avail. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Is this the same machine? I'm assuming it is, but want to make sure.

What does your Exchange admin say? Are they able to reproduce the problem
if they VPN in? Can anyone connect to Exchange over VPN? I mean my first
thought is that the VPN server has some connectively blocked to the network
in general.

I'm having nearly the same issue on a new installation of Outlook 2007 that
is replacing Outlook 2000. We're connecting via VPN to Exchange 2000. It
worked fine with Outlook 2000. I receive the same responses as the initial
post and have full access to all other server resources over the VPN.

I've resolved my problem. The exchange server name needs to be fully
qualified in the mail profile. (Control Panel>mail>Email Accounts>Exchange
Settings) Previoulsy, I had just listed the Micorsoft Exchange Server by the
server computer name only----it works on the local LAN and it did in Outlook
2000 via VPN. When I defined the server by the Fully Qualified Domain Name,
it validated my mail user name (underlines it). For example: Initially I
had just listed the Exchange Server by the server name "Server01". When I
changed it to the fully qualifed domain name of
"server01.smallbusiness.local" it worked. (We don't have a registered domain
name and just used the default of "smallbusiness.local" when we installed our
server software, SBS2000.)

I hope this helps. I searched for hours at Microsoft Support and didn't
find anything that applied. It was especially frustrating when we go from a
working application and loose functionality with an upgrade.

well the issue i have is that it resolves the computer in the mail
settings. if i put it in by IP address it comes back with the FQDN
and the full user name. I am going to try setting it up like you said
though, can't hurt. I am also looking into a timeout issue, as this
setup (outlook 2007) has worked before, and the only thing i can think
is that his exchange account which is getting rather large, is slowing
things down when trying to load over the vpn. i will post my results,
thanks for the help.

I have a very similar issue .. I am using a Notebook PC - there are no issues
at the office connecting on the LAN to Exchange; .. and also when at
location-1 connecting through VPN on ADSL broadband, Outlook 2007 connects
with Exchange 2003 and the network with full access.
The issue is when I go to alternate location-2; connection is through VPN
via satellite to the office. The connection through the VPN is made with
full accessability to the network drives, .. except Outlook will not connect
to my Exchange.
No settings on PC or Exchange are altered between location-1 & location-2
sites. The only obvious difference is that the office and location-1 have
the same ISP (ADSL broadband), and location-2 is a different ISP (satellite).
