Outlook 2003 "needs to close"

G

Gary Sawyer

Hi,

On my laptop (hp), Outlook 2003 generally works, but about once a day
(sometimes more), I get an error dialog that says that Outlook has
encountered a problem and needs to close. Which it does. I don't recall
this happening with earlier versions of Outlook. On other computers that I
use (desktops), I also see the problem, but MUCH less often -- maybe once a
month.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Gary.

Hi Gary,
Are there any error messages or numbers? Anything listed in your application
event viewer? Any prompt to send the error message to Microsoft?

I'm having the same problem EVERY time I close Outlook. Works fine otherwise
but everytime I close it I get the message

Hi Kathleen,

Thanks for your reply.

No error numbers, but the dialog box invites me to send Microsoft an error
report. I usually do, but I haven't gotten any sympathy cards back. Yet.

I'm concerned that I may be having soft errors on my laptop, but memory
tests and disk tests don't find failures.

Thanks,
Gary.

Hi Kathleen,

Your response reminded me about the Windows event viewer. I recorded the
events that occurred when Outlook closed, and learned that each error
occurred in the same DLL -- vlsp.dll. A little more investigation revealed
that the DLL was part of Fournelle Venturi, which I had installed when I
first got this laptop. Venturi was supplied by Verizon as part of my
Internet-access-via-cellular-phone package. Since I no longer use that
package, I removed Venturi. It's now been over 10 days since my last
Outlook-needs-to-close problem.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Gary.
